On 10 July-10 October 2017, In summer 2017 Dr Paula Jops, Curtin University, joined JGU as a Visiting Faculty with JSIA and CIAS. During this visit Dr Jops supported Dr Jessica Field, JSIA, in running a Refugee Research Programme summer internship with four BA Global Affairs and one PhD student. In this Programme, Dr Jops delivered lectures and research training to the interns and other students, and co-led a visit to a Tibetan refugee colony in Delhi with Dr Field. Dr Jops also strengthened JGU’s institutional links with local NGOs through undertaking collaborative research with the Jesuit Refugee Services.

On 27 April 2017, Mr. Mitry and Mr. Naved participated in a discussion moderated by Director of the Centre for India Australia Studies, Assistant Professor Shaun Star, on “Developments in Defamation Law: A Comparison between India and Australia”. It was observed that while the law attempts to strike a balance between an individual’s freedom of speech and a right to reputation, each jurisdiction has adopted a very different in trying to achieve this. Indeed, the incidence of criminal law defamation cases is much higher in India than in most other countries, including Australia. Speakers also spoke about the developments in technology and how this is shaping defamation law.
On 13 April 2017, Dr. Smith presented a distinguished public lecture on “Governance and Capability”, sharing his decades of experience as a senior public servant in Australia. The presentation posed some interesting questions on whether India’s public service is at an inflection point, especially under the strong political leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
On 13 April 2017, Dr. Freeman presented on the topic “Good Practices in Institutional Policies: An International Comparative Perspective” based on her research in the United States, Australia and Papua New Guinea. There was lively discussions during the Q&A session moderated by the founding Executive Director of CCGE, Dr. Mousumi Mukherjee. Issues about colonial roots of comparative education and the problematics of “good practices” in diverse contexts where institutions operate, were discussed during the session by the participating faculty and PhD students of JGU with the speaker.
On 6 April 2017, on the eve of World Health Day, Jindal Institute of Behavioural Sciences in collaboration with the Centre for India Australia Studies and the University of Melbourne organised a seminar on “'Depression: Let's Talk about what we all Should Know” at India Habitat Centre in New Delhi. This seminar that has brought together psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, counselling therapists and academics from India and Australia who are renowned experts in the mental health sector.

Jindal Global University, delivered a Distinguished Public Lecture on “The Crisis of Higher Education in India: How can public policy and governance reforms help?” to an audience of about 40 academics working the field of education, hosted by the Melbourne Centre for the Study of Higher Education, University of Melbourne (in collaboration with the Centre for India Australia Studies).

Jindal Global University, delivered a keynote address on “International Collaborations in Higher Education: An Indian Perspective” at a roundtable session attended by Vice Chancellors, Deputy Vice Chancellors, Deans and Government Officials hosted jointly by Asialink Business and the Australia India Institute (in collaboration with the Centre for India Australia Studies) at the University of Melbourne. On 13 February 2017, Professor C. Raj Kumar, Founding Vice Chancellor of O.P. Jindal Global University, delivered a Distinguished Public Lecture on “Corruption, Rule of Law and Governance in India” to an audience of over 125 guests at an event hosted jointly by Asialink Business and the Australia India Institute at the University of Melbourne. The lecture was attended by academics, policymakers, researchers, lawyers, business leaders and representatives of civil society. On 6 February 2017, Ambassador Dasgupta delivered a distinguished public lecture at O.P. Jindal Global University on “India Australia Relations: Is Education a Game Changer?”. The focus of the lecture was on the importance of education as the fulcrum in the growing Australia India relationship.

It was argued that the purpose of a cost order is to compensate the successful party in litigation for those costs necessarily incurred towards vindicating his or her right and obtaining justice.
