Water conscious planting

Our green spaces are designed to be both beautiful and sustainable. JGU is home to 132,966 species of shrubs and trees, and we prioritise water-conscious planting across the campus. We exclusively use treated wastewater for irrigation—no fresh water or domestic water is used—ensuring that our landscaping is both eco-friendly and resource-efficient.

We carefully select plant species that thrive with minimal water, helping us maintain a lush, green campus without placing pressure on local freshwater resources.

Plant Species on Campus That Consume Less Water:

  • Mitragyana parviflora (Kadamb)
  • Bauhinia purpuria
  • Erythreena indica
  • Ficus infectoria
  • Dalbergia sisso
  • Terminalia arjuna
  • Cassia siamea

Most gardens and lawns are irrigated with treated STP water through efficient drip and sprinkler systems, reducing reliance on freshwater. By combining smart planting strategies with recycled water, we maintain ecological balance, promote biodiversity, and create vibrant outdoor spaces for learning and relaxation.

Our landscaping serves as a living example of how thoughtful design and careful plant selection can conserve water while enhancing the campus environment.
