O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU), a premier institution committed to fostering a safe and inclusive environment, has established the Committee on Gender Sensitisation Against Sexual Harassment (COGSASH) as part of its Anti-Sexual Harassment framework. Grounded in the principles of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, and the University Grants Commission (UGC) Regulations, 2015, COGSASH is dedicated to preventing, prohibiting, and addressing sexual harassment across the JGU community. This committee reflects JGU’s commitment to upholding fundamental rights to equality, dignity, and a secure working and learning environment for all its stakeholders—students, faculty, staff, and visitors alike.
What is COGSASH?
COGSASH, or the Committee on Gender Sensitisation Against Sexual Harassment, serves as JGU’s Internal Complaints Committee, mandated to ensure a harassment-free campus. It operates under comprehensive rules that extend beyond legal requirements, addressing a broad spectrum of sexual harassment issues tailored to the needs of an academic institution. The committee comprises faculty members, administrative staff, student representatives (with 50% female representation), and external experts, ensuring diverse perspectives in its functioning. COGSASH is chaired by a senior faculty member and supported by a robust structure that includes a 24-hour helpline (1800-120-3845) and an email contact (cogsash@jgu.edu.in) for immediate assistance.
Work and Responsibilities
COGSASH undertakes a multifaceted role at JGU:
Prevention: It promotes awareness through gender sensitization programs, workshops, and public forums to educate the community about sexual harassment and foster a culture of respect.
Redressal: The committee provides a clear mechanism for filing complaints, ensuring confidentiality and timely resolution within a three-month filing window from the incident. Complaints can be lodged orally, in writing, or via email, with a process that adheres to principles of natural justice.
Scope: Its jurisdiction covers incidents on-campus and during off-campus university activities (e.g., fieldwork, excursions), applying to students, staff, faculty, officers, and even service providers or outsiders within JGU premises.
Policy Development: COGSASH evolves guidelines aligned with legal mandates and JGU’s ethos, recommending measures to enhance safety and equality.
Relevance at JGU
COGSASH is integral to JGU’s mission of creating a world-class educational institution where safety and dignity are non-negotiable. With a vibrant campus hosting thousands of students and employees, the committee ensures a secure space conducive to learning and growth. COGSASH bridges administration and community, reinforcing JGU’s commitment to justice, equality, and an inclusive academic environment.
