In India, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates 1 in 7 adults require care for one or more mental health conditions. Despite this enormous need, there is a dearth of Indian mental health professionals. Indeed, we know many mental health conditions can be effectively treated at relatively low cost, yet the gap between people needing care and those with access to care remains substantial.
With respect to depression alone, estimates suggest at least 280 million people worldwide are currently affected. In 2017, before the covid-19 pandemic, the WHO labelled India the world’s “most depressed country”. While India’s rank has improved in the intervening years, depression, anxiety, and a multitude of other mental health issues still exert tremendous personal and societal costs.

Health Centre initiatives
Understanding the importance of sexual and reproductive health for our students, staff & family members, the Health Centre has implemented several measures to ensure their comfort and well-being. The ratio of Female doctors available in health Centre is higher than male doctors & the 24×7 availability of female doctors & nursing staff in Health Centre provides a comfortable environment for consultation.
Additionally, a specialised Gynecologist visits the Health Centre twice a week to address the specific needs of our students, regular referrals are also arranged as per their requirements. These steps have been taken to ensure that the students, faculty, staff, workers and their family members receive the best possible care and support in matters related to sexual and reproductive health.
Sexual Health Awareness Day
The Peer Educator Initiative under Centre for Community Mental Health (CCMH) organised an event on Sexual Health Awareness Day on 11th September 2024. This day was dedicated to promoting education, open conversations, and respect around sexual health, myth busting and understanding consent. The event included an open conversation on sexual health, facilitated by Dr. Dahunlyne Shylla and the Peer Educators of JIBS, as well as a film screening of the documentary “Period. End of Sentence”.
Swabhimaan, a Centre for New Economics Studies (CNES) initiative
The premise of Swabhimaan is based on exploring the intersectionality of gender across the discourse of development studies, social policy, and entrepreneurship. The team engages with narratives of individuals who are bridging gaps in societal expectations of gendered identities, highlighting their value creation process, as an expression of their creativity, with an objective to highlight hitherto under-represented voices in the mainstream discourse.
View website Volume 2 Issue 3 – Sex EducationInternational Research Symposium on Sexual and Reproductive Health
Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) is a public health and human rights issue. It extends beyond physical health and includes the right to healthy, respectful relationships, inclusive, appropriate, and safe health services, access to reliable information, testing, and treatment, as well as prompt assistance and services (including access to affordable contraception).
Conversations on sexual and reproductive health also have implications for gender equality and related power dynamics, respect, safety, and freedom from stigma, violence, and discrimination. This symposium aimed to create a platform to dwell deeper on the various SRH issues and initiate critical dialogues around gender norms and existing business/governance structures that reproduce gender inequalities.

Sukoon – Centre for Mental Health
Sukoon provides the following services to the JGU community:
Background
SDG target 3.9.1, calls for a substantial reduction in deaths and illnesses from air pollution. SDG target 11.6.2, aims to reduce the environmental impact of cities by improving air quality.
According to the dashboard presented in the Sustainable Development Report created by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), significant challenges remain in India for the indicator ‘age-standardised death rate attributable to household air pollution and ambient air pollution’. Major challenges persist in ‘production-based air pollution’ which has a negative performance rating.
AQI Monitoring System
JGU has installed an outdoor AQI monitoring system, with a set of sensors based on the Central Pollution Control Board’s AQI calculator, which measures PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NO2, CO, O3 and NH3.
The AQI Monitoring System is used for identifying specific pollutants, taking action for reducing stationary sources of pollution, reporting longitudinal trends in data, and monitoring real time data for decision-making protocols in campus operations.
Smoking ban
Smoking inside the JGU campus, including both indoor and outdoor areas, is strictly prohibited.
