Peace justice and strong institutions

For peaceful societies, it is important that all people feel safe, included and free, no matter what their background is. Conflict and armed violence is connected with increased sexual violence, crime and exploitation. Promoting human rights and strengthening the rule of law is essential to create a sustainable foundation for peace to prevail. It is important to hold elected representatives accountable and voice our opinions in a way that supports inclusion and diversity.

Distinguished Public Lecture by Professor (Dr.) Luis G. Franceschi, Assistant Secretary General, The Commonwealth, London on “The Rule of Law in the Commonwealth: Diverse Communities & Shared Destinies” on 14th April, 20 23 at JGU.

Courses on human rights

The LL.M. in Human Rights offered at Jindal Global Law School is a forward-looking programme designed to equip students with the skill set to engage with contemporary challenges of the changing world order. The course structure of the LL.M. programme focuses on the human rights concerns arising from business activities, technology, migration, climate change and much more. The course offerings are unique and aim to expand upon conventional human rights discourse. The Human Rights specialisation will train future legal professionals to navigate the ever-evolving value systems and current human rights concerns. JGLS offers an opportunity to learn from international faculty who will bring forward perspectives from around the world, which are relevant for resolving these topical issues. Our modern world is closely integrated and we must look beyond national systems to overcome human rights related concerns. JGLS offers the optimum global environment for such a discourse to flourish.

Session on Academic Freedom & Democratic Leadership: Autonomy versus Accountability

JGU’s mission is enabled by three key factors that were ingrained in JGU’s founding vision – academic freedom, institutional autonomy, and financial independence. Over the past 13 years, these enablers have given us the opportunity to commit to key institutional objectives – public service, pluralism, innovation, diversity, and inclusivity.

With the confirmed status as an ‘Institution of Eminence’, JGU has entered a coveted group of top 10 private institutions in the country to be unshackled from regulatory controls and be given full autonomy.

JGU’s status as a private higher education institution recognised as an Institution of Eminence by the Government of India allows us to commit to and enable academic freedom and institutional autonomy. We are also driven towards expanding internationalisation, promoting high-quality research and teaching, and financial independence.

Student Council and Elected Representation

JGU encourages student participation in campus governance. For this purpose, the university and students have set up democratically elected student (union) councils across all its 12 schools. The student council oversees academic, professional and personal development of the students individually and as a group, in order to achieve overall excellence. The members also contribute in the academic and disciplinary proceedings and facilitate regular communication between the students, faculty members, administration and staff of JGU. The members of the student council are democratically elected and serve for a period of one academic year, comprising two semesters (Spring and Fall). The eligibility, qualifications and classifications for the different membership posts shall be established in the constitution governing the student council. The councils operate at the individual school level and all full time students are a part of it.

Student Representation in the JGU Governing Body

The JGU student council is very active and interacts twice a year with the senior administration pertaining to matters related to academics, employability, and life at JGU. The students directly interact with the Vice-Chancellor, and they have a very important role to play in the Governing Body.

The Committee on Gender Sensitisation Against Sexual Harassment (COGSASH) includes student members from every school of JGU. The administration and the student council ensure a 50% representation of females in constituting the Student members of COGSASH. The election of these student members is conducted by an independent body deemed to be the Election Commission. The Election Commission includes one outgoing Core Council Member of each school along with faculty members.

Policy for student representatives of COGSASH

Student representation at the high-level University Gatherings:

At JGU, student representation is cherished and integral to our university’s ethos. We hold student voices in the highest regard, recognizing their invaluable perspective in shaping our institution’s future. Therefore, at all high-level university gatherings, such as the annual general meeting, we extend special invitations to members of the student council. Their presence ensures that the student community’s interests, concerns, and aspirations are not only heard but also actively considered in our decision-making processes.

Sovereign Dreams, a two-day Mock Youth Parliament and Constitutional Quiz

“Sovereign Dreams – The Republic of Bharat @ 75” is a two-day event dedicated to honouring 75 years of the Indian Constitution. This immersive experience featured a series of competitions and guest sessions that delve into the historic legacy of our Constitution. Participants will explore the enduring values and principles established by our forefathers, gaining practical insights into their rights and responsibilities as citizens. Through engaging simulations and thought-provoking guest lectures, this event aims to equip the youth with a deeper understanding of constitutional values and their relevance in contemporary society. The Event consists of a Model Youth Parliament, Policy Drafting Competition and The Constitutional Quiz. Sovereign Dreams is a collaborative celebratory fest between Policy Corner JSGP and the JSGP Student Council. The Chief Guest and Speaker was Mr. Ashwani Dubey, an advocate on record at the Supreme Court of India. Mr Dubey is a seasoned legal professional with over two decades of experience across various legal disciplines. In his keynote address titled Article 32 – Adoption, Implementation, and Improvisation, a book authored by him, Dubey explored one of the most significant provisions in the Indian Constitution, often referred to by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar as the “heart and soul” of the Constitution. Article 32 grants citizens the right to constitutional remedies, enabling them to approach the Supreme Court directly to enforce their fundamental rights. In his address, Dubey provided a comprehensive analysis of this article’s historical importance, tracing the debates within the Constituent Assembly that led to its inclusion.

JGU MUN

In accordance with JGU’s mission to imbue students with global perspectives on contemporary global issues, it organises Model United Nations Conference sessions under the aegis of the JGU MUN Society and its Faculty Coordinators. The MUN Society is a body that is jointly managed by Faculty and Student representatives. MUN seeks to hone the skills of all participating students in the art of understanding and articulating on any global issue or problem by simulating debates being held on these at the UN and its various organs. JGU’s own students regularly represent the university in Model UN Conferences, Youth Parliaments and other such activities across India and abroad. In a competitive simulation of the UN called “Model United Nations,” students assume the roles of delegates from various nations and work towards resolving problems in the real world using the ideologies and viewpoints of the nation they are representing.

Conference on IP, Privacy, and Access to Justice in the Digital World Hosted by JIRICO & Georgetown Law School

The digital era has transformed the way we communicate with each other. Social networking sites and online business platforms interfaced with artificial intelligence, machine learning and internet of things (IoT) have simply transformed our social, political, legal and economic engagements. While the digital world has opened innumerable opportunities to engage in varied activities, it has also posed certain challenges. The digital ecosystem has transformed the way we perceive, create, own and store information and has even challenged our traditional notions of privacy and intellectual property rights. Governments and business entities are engaging in collecting data and creating digital identities. The pervasive nature of the modern digital environment raises concerns about privacy, how information is collected, who owns the information, what can be done with the information and where it should be stored. While the digital environment has facilitated businesses to thrive, we have also witnessed a sharp increase in cybercrime and digital piracy which threatens to disrupt the digital environment. In addition, new technologies can enable greater access to the civil justice system. It is necessary to explore novel approaches that are being pioneered to this end.

How to provide legal aid? An interactive workshop

The Centre from Law and Marginalisation Clinic, Centre for Justice, Law and Society (CJLS), Jindal Global Law School organised a skill based legal workshop. The workshop was an excellent opportunity to gain practical insights and hands-on knowledge on legal aid. This session was an engaging and interactive experience where students learnt about providing legal aid, directly from our team of lawyers, former clinic students and paralegals. They also learn how they can actively participate in these initiatives and contribute to making a difference.

Haryana Legal Aid Stakeholder’s Consultation

The “Haryana Legal Aid Stakeholder’s Consultation” was organised by the Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer Centre for Clinical Legal Education (Krishna Iyer Centre) at JGLS. The Krishna Iyer Centre engages in crucial legal aid work on trans justice, child rights, anti-caste advocacy, combating gender-based violence, criminal justice and  decarceration, and environmental justice. Equality before law, fair trial and due process are fundamental principles, central to the assurance of justice and fairness. To truly ensure these, effective and accessible legal aid is essential for those unable to afford legal representation. In this context, the Krishna Iyer Centre at JGLS is committed to contributing to legal aid delivery in Haryana. To advance this purpose, a one-day multi-stakeholder consultation on “Haryana Legal Aid Stakeholder’s Consultation” was hosted to bring together legal aid stakeholders including the judiciary, lawyers, civil society groups, grassroots activists, movement actors,  legal aid academics and lawyers in Haryana. This closed-door roundtable consultation aimed to create a collaborative platform for mapping critical issues and deliberating on the current legal challenges in Haryana. The was structured to include sessions on:

  1. Access to Justice for All (Plenary Session)
  2. Understanding the Justice Gap
  3. Institutional Perspectives on Legal Aid
  4. Building Legal Networks for Effective Legal Aid

Ethical Values

JGU’s Strategic Vision Report highlights the leadership’s mission to “Conduct capacity development programmes for practitioners from governments, corporations, and civil society organisations to enhance their leadership qualities and skills, management capacity and commitment to professional ethics” and having the “highest ethical standards in personal and professional behaviour” as a core value.

Education at JGU is intended to foster in our graduates, a participative consciousness and ethical imaginations for an active participation in democratic discourses and practices in emerging contexts, attributes we regard essential for living and ourishing in professional, public and private lives.

Our teaching, research, and collaborative and capacity building activities are centred around generating wider impact beyond the classroom and our campus, on issues of public concern to India, our regional neighbours, and other parts of the world. Part of this effort is also centred on nurturing public spiritedness amongst our students in order that they embody approaches that are ethical, fair and just, while pursuing work in both public and private sector enterprises. We believe that cultivating a tradition of public service will be key to achieving our larger mission.

We believe that by providing access to interdisciplinary programmes, an enabling, diverse, multicultural, and collaborative environment for teaching and research, an emphasis on community engagement, and opportunities to study at some of the best universities in the world, our students will gain a unique repertoire of qualities: a capacity for self-reection; intercultural sensitivity; a sense of social, civic and environmental responsibility; and commitment to being ethically and socially responsible global citizens.
