GHG Emissions

At JGU, we remain committed to sustainability, transparency, and responsible environmental management. For FY 2024-25, we partnered with a leading external firm to conduct a detailed accounting and reporting of our Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, following the globally recognized GHG Protocol standard.

Tracking and Reducing Our Carbon Footprint

Understanding our carbon footprint is an important step toward reducing it. The emissions assessment (2025) provides a clear picture of our direct and indirect operational emissions and offers a strong foundation for action. Building on this, JGU is actively developing a comprehensive plan to reduce emissions across our campus operations and activities. This initiative reflects our dedication to fostering a greener future, aligning with our institutional values, and contributing to global climate goals. Stay tuned for updates as we continue to implement sustainable practices and share our progress with the JGU community and beyond.

2025 (t CO2 e)

SCOPE 1

6405.613 t CO2 e

44.99%

SCOPE 2

7823.04 t CO2 e

TOTAL EMISSIONSS 14,228.66 t CO2 e

Scope 1: Direct emissions from our campus operations, like fuel use.

Scope 2: Indirect emissions from purchased energy, such as electricity.

This year’s assessment shows a significant 57% reduction in GHG emissions compared to last year, reflecting JGU’s continued progress toward a lower-carbon future. This outcome strengthens our commitment to sustainable campus operations and reinforces the importance of ongoing action, collaboration, and innovation in our climate journey.

We’re also exploring Scope 3 emissions such as those tied to our broader value chain, like commuting, business travel, and supply chains to get a fuller picture of our footprint. With the Scope 1 and 2 report now in hand, and Scope 3 analysis underway, we’re crafting an actionable plan to cut emissions across all our activities, paving the way for a truly sustainable campus.

Why It Matters

Understanding and reducing GHG emissions across Scopes 1, 2, and 3 is a vital step in tackling climate change. By aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, JGU is setting a bold example for higher education. Our efforts not only shrink our environmental impact but also inspire students, faculty, and staff to lead sustainably in their own lives and careers.

What’s Next

With the Scope 1 and Scope 2 report now complete, JGU is moving ahead with the development of a broader climate action plan. Priority areas under consideration include renewable energy integration, energy efficiency upgrades, operational optimization, and future Scope 3 assessment to understand value-chain emissions more fully.

These efforts reflect our commitment to aligning campus operations with global climate goals and advancing a greener, more resilient future for the JGU community.
