Equipped with state-of-the-art electrophysiological methods to study brain and cognitive functions, the Brain Behaviour Laboratory at Jindal Institute of Behavioural Sciences (JIBS) is a multidisciplinary center to analytically gauge mental functions, brain network dynamics, emotions, and individual behaviour.
Our equipment, tests and apparatus include:
S. Instrument no. | Name of the Instrument | Explanation of |
---|---|---|
1 | BRAIN MAPPING (THROUGH DIGITAL EEG) | Brain mapping technique enables one to look at the mid-brain in a new way, both seeing and experiencing its complexity. It shows that human emotions, form of attention and mental activities have their characteristics brain wave frequencies, amplitudes and patterns. Brain Mapping assesses brain waves in two parameters, which are, amplitude and frequency. The brain’s activity or arousal level is positively correlated with the EEG frequency. Thus, faster the brain waves oscillate the more active the brain is and higher the arousal level. It also facilitates to measure Brain Fitness Index, which measures brain’s resilience or toughness to stress and its ability to recuperate after stress. |
2 | AUDIO VISUAL REACTION TIME | Audio-visual reaction time measures the difference between the time taken to respond to an auditory/visual stimulus. This test can help you know how quick you are in reacting to stimuli. |
3 | DECISION MAKING TIME | This equipment measures how quickly one can make decisions in a complex situation. |
4 | GALVANIC SKIN REPONSE (GSR) MONITOR | Since the sweat glands are controlled by the sympathetic nervous system, the moments of strong emotion can change the electrical resistance/ conductance of the skin. Galvanic skin response is used as an indicator of psychological or physiological arousal. GSR provides the therapist near instant feedback of the client’s general state of relaxation, immediate emotional reaction, mental toughness, and anxiety levels. |
5 | HEART RATE MONITOR | The Autonomic Nervous System regulates all the major organs of our body. Thus, the monitoring of the heart rate is an indirect assessment of the Autonomics Nervous System. This assessment can be useful for measuring the fitness levels and can also be used to detect the various stressors for the individual. |
6 | DIGITAL FLICKER FUSION | This equipment is designed to measure how quickly one gets fatigued. It is regarded as a measure of information processing capacity. It is related to performance, stress factors, and anxiety. |
7 | DIGITAL STEADINESS TESTER | The Digital Steadiness Tester is designed to study the steadiness of human neuromuscular coordination, attention/alertness and concentration. This helps in assessing one’s steadiness levels in few minutes. |
8 | MULLER- LYERILLUSION | Muller-lyer illusion is a test of perception. It is an optical illusion consisting of stylized arrows. The subject is asked to estimate the length of two lines that have arrows pointing inwards and outwards. |
9 | VIGILANCE TEST | The vigilance test is administered to assess the alertness, vigilance and psychological mobilization. |
10 | OXY-VISION TEST | The oxy-vision equipment will reveal the level of oxygen intake which clearly corresponds with the alertness and vigilance level of the person. |
11 | ELECTROSLEEP | Electro sleep is a psychological treatment that applies small pulsed electric impulses across an individual’s head. Researchers claim that it has beneficial effects in conditions such as anxiety, depression, insomnia and stress. |
12 | LIE DETECTOR | A lie detector or polygraph measures and records several physiological indices such as blood pressure, pulse rate, respiration, and skin conductivity while the subject is asked and answers a series of questions. The belief underlying the use of the polygraph is that deceptive answers will produce physiological responses that can be differentiated from those associated with non-deceptive answers and help in distinguishing a lie from the truth. |
13 | THERMAL BIOFEEDBACK | Thermal biofeedback is the process of monitoring and displaying to an individual, the ongoing thermal fluctuations on the surface of the skin. It provides information not only ofone’s level of stress encountered but also some other fascinating traits of his personality worth considering. |
14 | RESPIRATION BIOFEEDBACK | This biofeedback informs about the dysfunctional breathing patterns and thus is useful for detecting the stress levels of an individual. It is also used as an effective training tool for inducing relaxation and is also used with several other therapies increasing their efficiency. |
15 | PROJECTIVE TESTS | Projective tests are used to assess the personality of the individual. Such tests seek to tap the unconscious of the subject to reveal repressed aspects of one’s personality. Following projective tests are available atJIBS.
|
16 | NON- PROJECTIVE TESTS | Various non-projective self-report inventories are also available at the Psychology Assessment Centre. These are: 16 Personality Factor Test. Emotional Intelligence Scale, Singh Personal Stress Source Inventory. Managerial Creativity Scale, Locus of Control Scale, Bell’s Adjustment Inventory, Youth Problem Inventory |
17 | POLYGRAPH TESTING | This facilitates psycho-Legal Perspectives on Eyewitness Testimony. It also measures the physiological changes while the participant is requested to answer a series of questions. |

The Forensic Science laboratory was established to create a suitable environment to propagate the knowledge of the forensic sciences amongst the students. To this effect, the lab organize several innovative training sessions as part of the forensic science elective course to impress upon the students the various kinds of analysis that fall under the purview of forensic science and the procedural imperatives that must be followed to ensure a fair trial.
Students learn about the forensic investigative process through a crime. This helps students understand the scope and limitations of forensic evidence and analysis and the appropriate forensic procedures that need to be observed.
The financial crime studies laboratory provides an opportunity for student members under the guidance of the faculty coordinators to conduct in-depth research on various aspects of financial crime. The lab also focusses on improving financial literacy, financial crime awareness through discussion forum, seminars, conferences, workshops. The faculty coordinators provide awareness session not limited to “how to lookout and beware of various types of scams” (phishing, through social media etc.), psychology of protecting one’s money online, for university workers and community members around and outside of the university. The laboratory initiate collaboration with various organizations and institutions to undertake consultancy in analysis and detection of financial crime.
