Criminology and Criminal Justice students of JGLS visit Tihar Prison
Jindal Global Law School (JGLS) has arranged a one-day visit to the Tihar Prison, Delhi, for students of its Applied Criminology course in the B.A. Criminology and Criminal Justice programme. The visit on September 22 was arranged by Dr. Michael L. Valan, Assistant Professor and Course Coordinator, along with Prof. Avni Bahri and Prof. Adwitia.
A total of 30 students were a part of this visit, where they interacted with Mr. Sanjay Beniwal, Director General (Prison), IPS, and other officers. They observed a wide range of activities that were undertaken by prisoners, such as weaving, crocheting, and operating a beauty salon. In addition, both the faculty and the students had a chance to engage with the undertrial prisoners.
Students were also exposed to various reformative rehabilitative measures undertaken inside the prison. Furthermore, the visit showcased the presence of small-scale industries within the prison grounds, where convicts were involved in the production of a variety of items. This initiative not only provided vocational training but also hinted at the possibility of rehabilitation and reintegration into society. The police officials also guided the students effectively and addressed all their questions. The visit has offered them a closer look at the prison system, its challenges, and its potential for change and rehabilitation.
