Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Friday articulated what he described as a distinctly "Swadeshi" understanding of judicial independence and the democratic framework, drawing an analogy to a traditional charpai (a cot)—a strong wooden frame supported by sturdy legs and bound with a flexible rope that, together "create a rigid but flexible space".

The CJI was speaking at the inaugural function of the International Convention on Independence of Judiciary at the Jindal Global Law School, OP Jindal University, Haryana.
