6-10 May 2024 – European Week: The European Project

The European Week—titled “The European Integration Project”—aimed at offering the JGU community a glimpse of the European Union’s long and, at times, difficult process of integration. The leitmotif of the week is European identity.

The following took place during the EU week 2024:

1. Exhibition prepared by CES students on EU history, values, culture, and philosophical standing.
2. Special lectures
3. Movie screening
4. Distinguished public lecture by Hervé Delphin, Ambassador of the EU to India.

The exhibition has been organized thematically around the following areas:

1. Historical Journey: From the Schuman Declaration on May 9, 1950, all the way to the Lisbon Treaty.
2. Institutional Journey: A visual map showing where the EU institutions are located, alongside a brief outline of their functions.
3. Cultural Journey: As European culture is vast, this section will focus on the “European Capitals of Culture”—the cities designated each year by the Council of the European Union as key urban settings for developing and promoting unique local culture.
4. Intellectual Corner: A display of (photocopied) key texts by leading European thinkers, including Sartre, Foucault, Levinas, Derrida, Bauman, Habermas, Balibar, and Bobbio.
5. Students’ Corner: Students will be encouraged to share comments and thoughts on their understanding of the Indian motto “Unity in Diversity,” which closely parallels the European Union’s motto, “United in Diversity.” The aim of this exercise is to bridge India and Europe by encouraging students to consider how identity—and a subsequent sense of commonality—is not only constructed but can be reconstructed to be more inclusive.
