About the talk:

In this insightful lecture on European Art History, Dr. Guite will provide a comprehensive overview of the significant contributions made by German artists throughout various artistic epochs, ranging from the 15th century through the 20th century, leading to the emergence of modern abstract art. She will explore the cultural and historical contexts that shaped these artistic movements and highlight key figures and their works. 

 About the Speaker:
Mercy Vungthianmuang Guite is working as an Assistant Professor at the Centre of German Studies, School of Languages, Literature, and Culture Studies, JNU, New Delhi.  Her Ph.D. research was titled “The Haitian Theme in German Literature: A Postcolonial and Intertextual Perspective” and dealt with three seminal texts: Heinrich von Kleist's “Die Verlobung von St. Domingo [The Betrothal in Santo Domingo]”, Anna Seghers’ “Karibische Geschichten [Caribbean Stories],” and Heiner Müller's “Der Auftrag [The Mission]”. She has been awarded the Wuppertal Scholarship for her doctorate (2014), the DLA-Marbach scholarship for the 5th International Summer School in Marbach, Germany (2011), and the DAAD scholarship—A New Passage to India at the University of Konstanz, Germany (2009-2010). One of her recent projects examines German ‘Intercultural’ literature (post-war to the present day) and is currently working on the intersection of the verbal and the visual arts in German literature from the 18th to the 20th century.
