Assistant Professor, Assistant Dean – International office & Career services
B.Sc. (Hons) (University of Delhi);
M.Sc. (HNB Garhwal University);
Ph.D. (University of Delhi)
Dr Rahul Devrani is an Assistant Professor and the Assistant Dean (career services) at the Jindal School of Environment and Sustainability. He completed his graduation in Geology (Hons.) from the Hansraj College, University of Delhi and his M.Sc. (Geology) from HNB Garhwal University. Dr Rahul earned his PhD degree from the Department of Geology, University of Delhi, with a CAS fellowship on the research question ‘Investigation of valley-fill deposits in the Alaknanda valley, NW Himalaya – it’s implication on river response studies’.
Dr Rahul Devrani is a geomorphologist by training, and he started his research experience as a Research Fellow at the Institute of Mathematical Science from 2008-2009. Thereafter, he worked as a Project Assistant in the Geotechnical Engineering Division of Central Road Research Institute, New Delhi, 2009-2010. He also worked as a Senior GIS Engineer in RMSI, India, from 2014-2017. His first postdoctoral stint was as a Postdoctoral Fellow (SERB-NPDF) in the School of Environmental Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, 2017-2018. His second postdoctoral work was as an Institute Research Associate at the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, 2018-2021. He was also a Dr D. S. Kothari Post-Doctoral Fellow (DSKPDF) at the University School of Environment Management, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, India (2021-2022). Before joining Jindal Global School of Environment and Sustainability, he worked as Maharishi Kanad Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Delhi School of Climate Change & Sustainability, Institution of Eminence, University of Delhi, India.
Dr Devrani’s research interests include understanding earth surface processes in different landscapes, particularly appreciating how glacial, fluvial, and hillslope processes shape landscapes on geological time scales. Furthermore, he is keen to comprehend how and to which extent natural hazards such as landslides or flash floods control sediment fluxes and changes in topography. His research approach covers a broad range of quantitative and qualitative geomorphological techniques. He combines field evidence (geomorphic mapping, sedimentary analysis) and numerical geochronological techniques with the analysis of digital elevation models, remote sensing (Hyperspectral Images and SAR data), geophysical surveys (electrical resistivity tomography), and numerical landscape evolution modelling by using C++, Python, R and JAVA. Dr Devrani has published several research papers in reputed peer-reviewed journals and book chapters in international publishing houses.
