Vision:
The vision of the center is to build capacity and generate interest in new questions, insights, methodologies and techniques in Economics and Finance among faculty members and students, to address contemporaneous issues in our society and economy.
Objectives:
Economics and Finance for Society Initiative (EFSI) (formerly known as Centre for Research in Economics and Finance) has been established as an initiative to build a center of excellence for research in economics and finance at JGU hosted at Jindal School of Banking & Finance (JSBF). Economics, financial economics, and econometrics are core areas for any institution working in Banking and Financial Services. As such, JSBF is aware of the need to establish thought leadership in key areas in these fields. This center is an initiative to achieve this goal.
There are four main objectives of the center:
- To connect researchers in Economics and Finance in JSBF and JGU to the larger body of global researchers to promote exposure to the latest ideas that may lead to research collaborations and partnerships.
- To establish our research credentials by publishing in the best journals in Economics and Finance.
- To promote and practice novel, emerging, unorthodox strands in economics and finance so as to emerge as thought leaders in fields that have the potential to contribute to our knowledge of the economy and the financial system of the future.
- To serve as a hub for collaborations amongst different practitioners in these fields so as to contribute efficiently to projects with real impact on our society and economy.

Vaneet Bhatia
Vaneet Bhatia is a PhD from IIM Raipur. He is associated with Jindal School of Banking & Finance since its inception in 2018. He conducts empirical research at the intersection of Finance and Economics. He primarily investigates the dynamic relationship among various assets in stock and commodity markets. His other areas of interest include bank efficiency & productivity and corporate capital structure decisions.
Ruhira Sen
Ruhira Sen obtained her PhD in Economics from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, USA. Her MPhil and MA in Economics are from the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning at Jawaharlal Nehru University, India. Ruchira also has a BA (Hons) in Economics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi.
Ruchira’s academic philosophy foregrounds interdisciplinarity and pluralism, which informs her research, teaching and service. As a researcher, Ruchira looks at feminist, institutional and Marxist perspectives to unpaid work and dowry systems. She also looks at the digital transformation of the global media and its impact on editorial policy. In her teaching, Ruchira has curated courses on data analysis for storytelling and data journalism. Meanwhile, as part of her service to the university, Ruchira is involved in co-ordinating India’s first postgraduate programme in data journalism.
Amlan Das Gupta
Amlan Das Gupta obtained his PhD in economics from University of British Columbia in 2014. He is currently engaged as an Associate Professor at Jindal School of Banking and Finance. Amlan has worked in the fields of development economics, especially on issues related to food security in India, which was the topic of his doctoral dissertation. He has published work on the intersection of food security and climate change adaptation. He is currently engaged in projects related to environmental economics and political economy.
Sudipta Sen
Sudipta Sen is a fellow in economics from Indian Institute of Management Indore. He also holds a certificate in Machine Learning from Stanford University in Coursera. Sudipta has worked in the area of Macroeconomics, Financial Markets and Environmental Economics. His current research interest is in the application of machine learning techniques to time series analysis.
Vatsalya
Vatsalya is a doctoral candidate in economics at Tilburg University and a junior member of the Tilburg Institute of Law and Economics (TILEC). He has a BA (Hons) in Economics from the University of Delhi, M.Sc. (Cum Laude) in Economics (Resources, Development and Growth) and Research Masters (Distinction) in Economics from Tilburg University in the Netherlands. His research is focussed on using the tools of Microeconomics, particularly Game Theory, to better understand how societies govern themselves to create and maintain what Oliver Williamson called good order and workable arrangements.
Soumyadip Roy
Soumyadip Roy obtained his PhD in economics from Iowa State University, United States in 2016. He currently works as an Assistant Professor at Jindal School of Banking & Finance and teaches courses in economics, statistics and management. Soumyadip has been a banker in the past and has worked in the area of risk management for Citibank, Discover Financial Services and GE Capital. He is currently working on papers related to the American labour market, Indian farm versus non-farm sector and milk cooperatives in Haryana.
Dhritiman Gupta
Dhritiman Gupta obtained his PhD in Economics from Indian Statistical Institute, Delhi. He also has a Masters in Economics from Toulouse School of Economics and another Masters in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics. He did his BA in Economics from Jadavapur University. Currently, he is Assistant Professor in the Jindal School of Government and Public Policy, O.P. Jindal Global University.
He primary research area is Microeconomic theory. Specifically, he is interested in models of Collective Action and Industrial Organization. He is also interested in theoretical issues in development and political economics.

Ishan Anand
Ishan Anand holds a PhD in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. As a recipient of the World Bank Robert S McNamara Fellowship, he was a visiting fellow at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. His research interests include agrarian studies, inequality, exclusion, labour and political economy. Previously, he taught at Ambedkar University Delhi.
