Swathysree is a doctoral student in Economics at the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta. Before joining the PhD programme, she has worked with HSBC as a risk analyst for two years. She holds an Integrated Masters degree in Economics from the University of Hyderabad and is a recipient of the University Gold Medal for securing the first rank.
Her doctoral thesis explores the evolution of India’s capital goods sector from the standpoint of technological capabilities and the role of the state on the one hand and international integration on the other in shaping that trajectory. Her research interests include Economic Growth and Development, Industrial and Trade Policy, Role of State, International Trade, Global Value Chains, and Technological Change and Innovation.
She has published book chapters in the books titled “India’s Economy and Society: Lateral Explorations” (Springer) and “World Trade and India: Multilateralism, Progress and Policy” (Sage Publications). She has also co-authored a report for the Department of Heavy Industry, Government of India and Engineering Export Promotion Council titled “Leveraging Trade Agreements to Boost Export from Indian Capital Goods Sector”. Her research was featured in the economic and policy portal, Ideas for India, and in the media with the Hindu Business Line.
Her research has been accepted and presented in reputed international and domestic conferences such as European Association for Evolutionary Political Economy (EAEPE), IIMB Management Review Doctoral Conference (IMRDC), The Indian Econometric Society Conference (TIES) and Annual Conference on Economic and Public Policy (ACEP). She was also selected to attend the 1st Unicamp International School on Development Challenges and the RIS-EXIM Bank Summer School on International Trade Theory and Practice.
