This case aims to discuss the journey of Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL) from being a family run business to the professional organization that it is today. The case traces the beginning of JSPL from 1989 to the present day highlighting its growth and expansion phase, and its entry into the new millennium as a world class organization. The changes in people, processes, culture, technology and policies that were implemented in JSPL which together helped it to transform into a global organization are the main focus of the case. The role of the main actors especially that of the MD and CEO, Mr. Ravi Uppal, and Chairman, Mr. Naveen Jindal, is etched out to showcase the role of leadership in organizational change. The case will help management students to understand the strength and weakness of a family run business; how professionals and organizational change initiatives help in the transition; and what the challenges are in this process and how to overcome them. The case may be used in courses like organizational change and transformation, change management, family business and strategic management.
