Programme Curriculum: B.A. Honours in Psychology

The four-year curriculum consists of a mix of core and specialized courses in the psychological sciences and general elective courses. The core (foundational) courses introduce the fascinating field of psychology and its many subdisciplines, ensuring all students gain a comprehensive and rigorous understanding of psychological theory, experimentation, and practice.

Specialized courses introduce psychological topics and findings beyond those offered in core courses, with an emphasis on the field’s major domains, including treatment (e.g., clinical and counselling psychology) and applied (e.g., education, forensic, industrial/organization).

General elective courses are offered by the other schools of JGU. This multi-disciplinary approach is designed to ensure students gain broad exposure to fields of study outside psychology. Students may, at their discretion, focus on courses from one particular JGU school. If requisite coursework is completed, student may graduate with a disciplinary minor.

All students also participate in practicums and skill-based courses, intended to ground theoretical learning in hands-on, real-world experience. Students must also complete internships during their winter and/or summer breaks, facilitating student engagement with disparate psychological professionals and organizations, including mental health centres, hospitals, government organizations, private businesses, NGOs, etc.

Finally, students have the option to graduate with a B.A. (Hons.) degree or B.A. (Hons.) with Research degree. The latter requires specialized instruction in experimental research design, data collection, and analysis. Students must complete a Thesis during their final (fourth) year of study.
