Mr Raunaq Chawla is currently a lecturer at the Jindal School of Psychology & Counselling. A psychology enthusiast, teacher and trainer, he excelled as a psychology student by completing his Bachelor’s and Master’s from the University of Delhi. Raunaq’s valuable learning, both as a student and as a researcher/teacher, is a great asset for him for adaptive teaching. Taking psychology as a main subject in the senior secondary school was a turning point in Raunaq’s academic life, which decided both his academic pursuit for higher studies and his subsequent career as a psychology teacher. During his college days, he was awarded for being the sincerest student of his class.
For PhD research, he chose an issue that concerns all of us – waste management – with focus on the waste management behaviour of Delhi residents. Through his research, he is exploring the role of psycho-social factors in people’s waste management behaviour. He is currently in his final year of PhD.
In his over four years of working as a psychology professor and trainer in different academic setups (schools and colleges) and with students of diverse age groups, Raunaq acquired valuable psychological learning while observing and understanding varied patterns of human thinking and behaviour. As a teacher, his prime objective is to exhort his students to think and come up with new ideas on the topic being discussed in the class.
During this initial phase of his career, Raunaq undertook student training/counselling assignments in different parts of India – Gurgaon, Bilaspur, Raipur, Ranchi, Rudrapur, Hazaribagh and Bokaro – and conducted training in over 25 schools.
He has taken various psychology courses as a regular and guest assistant professor in IGNOU, JIMS, Rohini, Delhi, and Lakshmi Bai College, University of Delhi, and Atlas SkillTech University, Mumbai.
Raunaq has always taken interest in research. In his undergraduate years, he represented Zakir Hussain Delhi College in Delhi University’s Antardawani to display the research project “Empowering the Elderly from Weaker Sections”. For his Master’s degree, he completed a dissertation on “Relationship of individual and organizational factors with knowledge hiding in IT sector organizations: An Exploratory Study”.
Efficient waste management with active participation of the masses is a prime objective of the Swachh Bharat Mission. But, unfortunately, majority of people don’t see inefficient waste management as a serious problem. Therefore, he thought of making his PhD research relevant to those who are working for achieving the waste management objective of the Swachh Bharat Mission. After gaining preliminary insights about the waste management problem, Raunaq understood that for doing his research pragmatically, the best way is to follow the mix methods approach. This method enables the researcher to use both the qualitative and quantitative research methods for better outcomes.
Raunaq started his career as a life skills trainer for the students aged 6 to 18 years. He successfully met the challenge, presented by this job, of devising interaction-based learning activities for diverse groups of students. The positive outcomes, observed in the students as a result of teaching/training by him, were appreciated by the institutions he was engaged with. He undertook student training/counselling assignments in different parts of India – Gurgaon, Bilaspur, Raipur, Ranchi, Rudrapur, Hazaribagh and Bokaro – and conducted training in over 25 schools.
Raunaq’s second job, an academic counsellor at an IGNOU study centre, came with an entirely different profile than that of his first job. At the IGNOU study centre, he taught and mentored MA Psychology students, most of whom were professionals, working in various government and private institutions. They had been pursuing a degree course to support their career progress. As an academic counsellor, he had evaluated and given opinions on different psychology projects undertaken by the students. This enabled him to learn about project evaluation and enhance his teaching skill-set.
In recent times, he has taught different subjects in various undergraduate psychology courses as a regular and guest assistant professor in JIMS, Rohini, Delhi, and Lakshmi Bai College, University of Delhi. He was also assigned to take lectures as a guest teacher in consumer behaviour for the MBA program by Atlas SkillTech University, Mumbai.
The subjects Raunaq has taught at undergrad and post-grad levels form a diverse array. These include research methods in psychology, business research and SPSS, introduction to psychology, psychology of individual differences, biopsychology, health psychology, media psychology, psychological research, applied social psychology, consumer behaviour, organizational behaviour, social psychology, positive psychology, clinical psychology, and statistics in psychology. He has also supervised thesis at graduation level.
