B.Sc. (Hons.) Environment and Sustainable Development- Programme Introduction

In the year 2021, we face an increasing array of environmental challenges that require greater levels of innovation and collaboration among industry, government, academics and communities. Jindal School of Environment and Sustainability (JSES) hopes to support the global efforts (India/Asia/Global South) toward a sustainable future with cutting-edge teaching, research and practice-based engagement. Through national and international collaborations, JSES will promote interdisciplinary studies, joint teaching and research programmes, and a comparative perspective on environment and sustainability issues. JSES has now opened admissions to the B.Sc. (Hons.) Environment and Sustainable Development programme for the academic year 2022-23.

The B.Sc. (Hons.) Environment and Sustainable Development uniquely combines natural and social sciences with humanities to equip students with a thorough understanding of sustainable development and its many facets. The programme is distinguishable from the B.A. in Environmental Studies based on its specific focus on the Sustainable Development Goals and its emphasis on scientific knowledge.

The scope & need for a B.Sc. (Hons.) Environment and Sustainable Development

Industries and companies require professionals with training to comprehend the complex issues in the nation’s environmental landscape. They need environmental managers and sustainability managers to assess and advise on environmental compliance while ensuring continued productivity. An environmental professional can point out the norms related with compliance; however, a graduate of the sustainable development programme would be able contribute with more depth by pointing out the ‘way forward’ that would enable the achievement of the conservation of natural resources without compromising productivity. Specialised training and education in the concepts of sustainable development provide this edge.

The Third Sector is also in need of such specialised professionals. The Third Sector plays a key role in providing aid and support to the most remote corners of the nation. Environmental conservation goes hand in hand with rural development and the promotion of green livelihoods. Non-governmental Organisations need professionals who can understand and analyse complex problems related to the development versus environmental conservation debate. A sustainable development professional can easily fill this gap and would also be able to draft and implement projects, owing to the unique skill set that they will have in the domain of sustainable development.

The new B.A./B.Sc. (Hons.) in Sustainable Development at JSES will also train students in the international dimensions of sustainability and thereby open up a kaleidoscope of international opportunities. Whether it be international organisations, businesses or consultancies, they will all be in need of such highly trained professionals.
