Prerna Subramanian

Prerna Subramanian, a critical geographer and cultural studies scholar, earned her Ph.D. from Queen’s University, Canada, focusing on the spatial and gendered dynamics of transgender representation in contemporary Indian visual culture. Her doctoral thesis, “Playing It Safe: The Indian Middle-Class And Places of Contemporary Visual Transgender Representation,” critically examines these dynamics, aiming to shift the discourse from representation and visibility to mobility justice in media. Prior to joining Jindal Global Law School, Prerna was actively involved in labor organizing initiatives in Canada, advocating for equitable labor practices for migrant workers.

During her master’s program in Cultural Studies at IIT Gandhinagar, Prerna’s academic work received the Presidential Gold Medal. Her research, which explored vulnerable erotic encounters in Chicu’s Soliloquy, was published as a book chapter titled “Vulnerable Erotic Encounters: A Chronotopic Reading of the Bus-Space” in Mobility, Spatiality, and Resistance in Literary and Political Discourse by Palgrave Macmillan in 2021. Currently, she is workshopping her Ph.D. dissertation and exploring opportunities for forthcoming articles and book projects.
