Programme Introduction

The JSES B.A. (Hons.) in Environmental Studies opens the pathway for working in the international and national arenas in this complex, challenging and exciting discipline which is set to become more and more sought after as time goes on. A large number of businesses, government bodies and organisations in India and across the world are seeking ways to be more sustainable, energy efficient and climate-appropriate, and need experts in this area.

This is a multi-disciplinary, contemporary degree through which you will gain knowledge of a number of key areas that play a role in sustainable development and the sustainable management of natural resources with courses in environmental science, policy, law and the social sciences, students get a broad education and learn how to understand and connect perspectives from these key disciplines. They are, thus, equipped with the skills needed to be able to address the challenges of sustainable development, whether in the policy, law, science or conservation fields.

The B.A. (Hons.) in Environmental Studies will help you gain a thorough grounding of this subject area in the context of sustainability. You will be empowered to make a difference for the present as well as future generations; helping shape our collective futures and bring about sustainable policy-making, management and governance that is directed towards the balancing of environmental, economic and social factors.

Learning Outcomes

  • Learning the basic theories of environmental studies.

  • To learn the philosophy behind environmental studies and different movements related to environment.

  • To appreciate the various existing theories related to environmentalism.

  • Ensuring that students from diverse backgrounds (including differently abled students and students from disadvantaged backgrounds) get a level playing field for their academic endeavors.

  • To learn the environmental ethics so that the practical application of students produces some benefit for the society.

  • Understanding the economic, cultural and political factors behind the environmental and sustainability issues.

  • Appreciating the global nature of environmental and sustainability issues so that they can be applied contextually at all levels including global, national and local.

  • Learning the skills required to do critical analysis, qualitative analysis, quantitative analysis and problem-solving exercises for environment.

  • To learn the skills required for the evaluation of environmental policies.

  • To get inter-disciplinary knowledge from other schools of JGU through cross-electives to get a better holistic academic training.

International Collaborations

Jindal School of Environment and Sustainability (JSES) hopes to lead the world (India/Asia/Global South) toward a sustainable future with cutting-edge teaching, research and practice-based engagement. It will develop a strategic plan that builds a sustainable future in this extraordinary time. Through national and international collaborations, JSES will promote interdisciplinary studies, joint teaching and research programmes, and a comparative perspective on environment and sustainability issues.

Experiential Learning

JSES has now opened admissions to the BA (Hons.) in Environmental Studies programme for the academic year 2021-22. In the near future, JSES will integrate Summer School; Study Abroad; Postgraduate (Master of Environmental and Sustainable Development, Master of Environmental Legal Studies, Master of Environmental management/Sciences and policy); Doctoral programme (Doctor of Philosophy in Environment and Sustainability).
