FAQs for B.A. (Hons.) Liberal Arts and Humanities

Applicants to the B.A. (Hons.) Liberal Arts & Humanities at JSLH should have completed the 10+2 level of schooling or its equivalent with minimum 60% aggregate marks. Students completing grade 12 in 2021 can also apply. Students from all boards CBSE/ ISC/A-levels/IB/ State Board/NIOS are eligible to apply.

Candidates will be selected through a holistic admissions process conducted over three rounds based on a personal statement, supplemental question, X and XII Grade Marks, Faculty Interview and at par JSAT/SAT/ACT score.

The Interview Round

Once an application form has been submitted, it is reviewed by the Admissions Committee, which shortlists candidates for the interview round.

All shortlisted candidates are required to attend the personal Interview either through Skype/ telephone/in person. In case a candidate’s status is “No Show” without prior intimation to the admissions committee the application automatically goes into the dormant stage.

 Provisional Offer Letter:

When applicants have gone through the interview round, they can expect to receive one of following communications:

  • Provisional offer letter of admission
  • Waitlisted (possibility of an offer at the end of the admissions cycle or earlier)
  • Rejection of admission

If applicants get a provisional offer letter they would need to confirm their acceptance by completing the reply note, which would be part of provisional offer letter, and send it back as directed in the letter.

Registration Fees:  After sending the offer letter, you are required to pay the registration fee of Rs1,65,000 which is refundable in accordance with the University policy.

Final Offer Letter: On the basis of your entrance exam scores and 12th grade performance  and subject to you clearing the Faculty Interview, we will issue your final offer letter on registration day, where we will confirm your scholarship amount in accordance with the University policy.

  • The BA (Hons) in Liberal Arts and Humanities is a three year programme that trains students to think critically, and in an inter-disciplinary manner. While students choose a specialization (Major) in their 3rd semester, Foundation courses hone their skills in making connections across disciplines. Experiential learning is a key component of all courses in JSLH, emphasizing ‘learning by doing’. Small class sizes (no more than 30 students) allow for interaction between peers and with the instructor.

 

  • What is the course structure?

 

  • The JSLH curriculum has two principal divisions: 19 Foundation courses (Semester 1-3) that introduce students to a range of disciplines, including Inter-disciplinary seminars; Communications Skills courses, and Expressive Arts. 10 Major courses (semester 4-6) enable students to specialize in a particular discipline. Students also have the possibility of opting for an inter-disciplinary self-designed Major. In addition, students take a minimum of 6 electives that complement their Major.

 

To graduate from JSLH, a student needs to have a minimum of 150 credits (each course is typically worth 4 credits). This also includes 10 credits worth compulsory internships.

Major options in JSLH include: Economics; Environment and Sustainable Development; History; International Business; Literary Studies; Philosophy; Political Science; Psychology; Sociology and Anthropology. Students also have the option of doing a self-designed Major that combines their interest in two or more areas listed above.

JSLH does not offer a minor, but with a self-designed option students can explore more than one area of interest.

Each Major has some compulsory courses and some optional courses (total of 10 courses minimum). In addition students need to take 6 electives that can complement their Major area, or can be from a different stream.

A student chooses ONE Major area (listed above). To qualify for a Major, students must complete a MINIMUM of 10 courses. With a self-designed Major, students have the option combining two or more disciplines.

A Liberal Arts curriculum is designed to train students in creative and critical thinking, with strong abilities in communication skills. A focus on inter-disciplinarity and a broad knowledge base equips students to be adaptable and flexible in an ever-changing work place. All students in JSLH have the option of going for a semester abroad in their 5th This opportunity is available with partner universities (example, iCLA Japan; University of Utrecht; Trinity College Dublin; Maynooth University; Queen Mary University of London; Carleton University and others). Student mobility occurs on an even-exchange agreement, which means students pay their JGU fees, and need cover only travel and accommodation and living costs at their destination university.

 

JSLH also has two dual degree programmes with Rollins College, Florida and Deakin University. Students, after completing 2 years in JSLH move on to these partner universities, and at the end of two years get a dual degree from Both JGU and the partner university.

 

In addition, several summer and winter short term programmes are available through JGU, such as Oxford-JGU winter programme in Politics, Philosophy, Economics (PPE); Sciences Po- JGU programme in European Affairs; Harvard-JGU programme in Human Rights; Granada-JGU summer programme in Spanish language and culture; and several others.

From 2020, JSLH will start a one year fellowship programme in advanced research and innovation. Upon graduating from JSLH, students can opt for this.

JSLH students have taken up internships with research centres within JGU after graduation. Some alumni have also worked in think-tanks in Delhi and other parts of India.

FAQs for our BFA Program

The art program at JSLH collaborates with leading contemporary artists and art schools from India and abroad. Our goal is to provide world-class art education comparable with the best art institutions around the globe. Our interdisciplinary approach to art and the integration of liberal arts and visual art education follow the scheme of the leading art programs world-wide. At the same time, we are also conscious of our geopolitical location and the rich visual and artistic traditions of the subcontinent. While training our students to become contemporary artists, we want them to develop a practice which is rooted in their milieu and thus to pave new paths for Indian art and the Global South.     
The BFA program encourages students to develop their unique art practice and visual language. It introduces students to a variety of artistic techniques and skills, enabling them to focus on concept rather than medium. This interdisciplinary approach allows students to think beyond the boundaries of the medium and fuse media, in order to stay in sync with contemporary art practices.  
Visual art is not a restricted field. Contemporary artists engage with social, political and philosophical issues, not only with formalist artistic concerns. The liberal arts provide a holistic education and a space for exploration, which are crucial for the development of contemporary artists. The various subjects which are taught in the liberal arts program provide the students with a wider perspective to interact with the world and thereby enrich their art practice.
Art education develops a unique set of skills that are rare to find in other disciplines and are highly sought after in different fields: creativity, innovation, imagination, problem solving, improvisation, critical thinking. Accordingly, there are varied career options that a BFA graduate can pursue. There are no stepwise guidelines or prescribed sets of rules to teach creativity. It is gained through continuous efforts, perseverance and openness to discover and question oneself. There are several ways to develop artistic sensibilities: exposure to diverse art-making processes, continuous engagement with art techniques, and discussion with mentors and peers. The student should be willing to learn, open to chances, and have the courage to make mistakes. 
We want students with a passion for art and creativity, and who are willing to learn and more importantly to unlearn. Art is a journey of self-discovery that does not yield quick results. We are looking for sensitive and intelligent students who are willing to embark on this unique voyage.  
We believe in a holistic admission process that enables us to discover the unique personality of each candidate. We are open to accepting applicants with diverse academic backgrounds, not only art students. Apart from the entrance exam, we will conduct personal interviews with the candidates.
