Prof. Harsh Vardhan Bhati is an Assistant Professor at the Jindal Global Law School, O. P. Jindal Global University. Additionally, he is an Indian lawyer specialising in environmental, natural resources and energy law. Harsh has obtained his B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) degree from Jindal Global Law School. He was awarded the Environmental Ambassador LL.M. Award to pursue an LL.M. in Environmental, Natural Resources, and Energy Law at Lewis & Clark Law School, USA. Currently, he is pursuing his Ph.D. in Environmental Law at the Faculty of Law, Uppsala University.
Prior to joining JGLS, Harsh practiced as an Environmental Lawyer and admitted to the Indian Bar Council in 2015. He worked as Legal Counsel at the Office of Additional Advocate General of the State of Rajasthan and represented State Departments of Forest, Mining, Environment, Petroleum, and Law & Justice before the Hon’ble High Court of Rajasthan. Harsh has also worked as a Legal Research Associate at the Bengaluru-based Environment Support Group (ESG), an International NGO dedicated to legal advocacy for vulnerable communities and ecosystems across the Indian subcontinent. He worked on a broad range of environmental and human rights campaign and Court cases namely, municipal waste management in urban and rural Bengaluru, Science City Project and diversion of grassland in Challakere, conservation of lakes in Bengaluru, tree felling issues, etc.
During his LL.M, he received ample of opportunities to deepen his interest in comparative environmental law. As part of the International Environmental Law Project (IELP), he worked as a Law-Clerk on a legal project regarding Japan’s new whaling regulation “New Scientific Whale Research Program in the Antarctic Ocean” (NEWREP-A) and Standard of Review under Annex VII Arbitration. During his time at JGLS and L&C, he received opportunities to contribute toward legal and social advocacy in Ecuador and Amazon Rainforest, Brazil regarding rights of indigenous people under International environmental law and constitutional law of respective countries.
Harsh has published in international law journals and written reports on waste management and bonded tenancy. His primary research interest includes environmental law & policy, cultural heritage, renewable energy, sustainable use of energy and natural resources, and rights of nature (legal Personhood).
