India-Australia Studies (CIAS)

The Centre for India Australia Studies (CIAS) is the first and only Centre with a focus on the India-Australia bilateral relationship that is embedded in an Indian Higher Education Institution. This emphasises the scope for an increase in momentum, from an Indian perspective, for this important bilateral relationship.

With this strategic bilateral relationship becoming of an increasing importance, there is scope for numerous stakeholders, not just in Government, to strive for a deeper and more meaningful engagement. CIAS is focused on building stronger links between Indian and Australian:

(ii) Researchers and Academics
(iii) Students and Youth
(iv) Businesses
(v) Government and Policy-makers.

In essence, the six pillars on which CIAS rests its objectives are:

· The CIAS aims to increase awareness and discussion about the importance of the India-Australia relationship through public lectures, roundtables, publications and by encouraging Australians and Indians to engage in the growing India-Australia discourse. To date, the CIAS has hosted over 200 Australians in India since its inception, each spreading awareness about Australia across different facets of industry, scholarship and policy.

· The CIAS empowers, engages and educates students and young leaders in Australia and India through student mobility programs, internships, short courses, seminars and lectures. The India Immersion Programme is hosted annually by the CIAS. This three week course has already hosted more than 100 Australian students, funded by the Australian Government’s New Colombo Plan. It’s aim is to introduce young Australians to India. The international Internship program, partners with Australian and Indian institutions to provide opportunities for young Australians and Indians to gain valuable work experience in the other country. To date, more than 20 students have participated in this programme. The CIAS also runs an Australia Studies course to provide Indian students an insight into Australia, from a cross-disciplinary perspective.

· The CIAS is engaging with Government and policy-makers to stimulate and shape discussion and debate on issues critical to the bilateral relationship. The CIAS hosts joint conferences, roundtables and dialogues with Australian institutions and Government departments. The CIAS has made whitepaper submissions to the Australian government and hosts valuable roundtable discussions on significant aspects of the bilateral relationship, inviting experts from both India and Australia.

· The CIAS increases academic collaboration and research between Australia and India through academic exchanges, facilitation of research collaboration and the publication of multi-disciplinary and comparative research across different facets of India, Australia and the bilateral relationship. The CIAS has hosted numerous conferences in partnership with Australian institutions and has facilitated the publication of a number of joint articles and opinion pieces on the bilateral relationship.

· The CIAS facilitates a range of training and skill development programs between Australian and Indian institutions.

· The CIAS works closely with Indian and Australian businesses looking for opportunities to enter or grow their commercial interests in the context of the growing economic relationship. Partners of the CIAS also host Indian students for internships and work with Indian faculty on research collaboration
