Samagana

This series of IDEAS events is a showcase of work- in-progress from each IDEAS Constellation. Sāmagāna represents the philosophy and science of uniting our thought and learning, and denotes the beginning of purposeful creation. As researchers, we juxtapose this historic word as the vision of our Working Paper Discussion series. Herein, we invite the scholarly community to engage with the ongoing research of our Fellows and Associates to help them identify new perspectives and refine the scope of their ongoing research.

Citizenship in India: Parsing the complexity of digital identity systems

The biometric identity project in India called Aadhaar (meaning foundation in Hindi) was established with the purported intent of giving every resident of India a unique ID in order to ensure that social security measures and other welfare mechanisms would reach the last mile. The collection of biometrics (fingerprints, eye scans, photographs), it was emphasised, was to ensure that no duplicates were created, and each ID would be unique. And thus was built the world’s largest data management project. However, since then, there have been several problems of duplication, implementation issues, failure of infrastructure, security breaches, and privacy issues. Buttressing the digital identity project have been several moves to push digitalisation in other spheres as well.

Would you rather be stuck with a man or a bear?

This paper explores the gender discourse on social media surrounding the TikTok trends. Through a comprehensive analysis of user-generated content, comments, and reactions, this study aims to understand the underlying themes and societal attitute reflected in gender discourse around violence and stereotypes and the negotiation of culture norms.
