The two-hour skill development programme was held at Radisson Hotel Kathmandu and was attended by over 100 participants from different colleges and schools of Kathmandu, Nepal including, principals of Junior Colleges. The Principals’ Meet cum Teachers Training programme was headed by Dr. Sanjeev P Sahni, Principal Director of JIBS; Director for Center for Innovative Leadership and Change and Advisor to the Vice Chancellor at JGU. Dr. Manjushree Palit, Deputy Director & Assistant Professor, JIBS was also a key speaker at the event.

“This was a great learning experience and a wonderful initiative by JIBS” said one of the participants. Many principals expressed interest in further collaborating with JIBS on organizing training programs for their teachers. Many showed interest in visiting JIBS at OP Jindal Global University to attend teachers training program offered by JIBS. “We are interested in further training opportunities with JIBS as we are really impressed with the initiative”

With an aim to offer value addition to the school education system, JIBS is actively working with teachers across India and other countries and offering short term courses to help them better customize their teaching mechanisms to meet the needs of school children. Dr Sahni and his team have conducted similar training programmes for teachers in India recently. They also travelled on a multi-city tour of UAE to engage with school teachers there.

“School education lays the basic foundation of learning in children. If supported by right teaching practices it plays a pivotal role in instilling a spirit of enquiry and pursuit for knowledge in them. It is therefore imperative to give special attention to teaching methodologies at school and develop approaches that involve children into the learning process and catalyze their minds to ask questions, rather than remain passive listeners. At JIBS we have undertaken several studies and researches to understand the best approaches and practices to school education and we have incorporated the knowledge obtained from them into a series of courses and programs for teachers,” says Dr. Sanjeev P Sahni.

Professor Sahni, who holds a PhD in Educational Psychology and a Post Graduate in Counseling Psychology, shared his extensive and vast experience of the field (education and administration). He also focused on the paradigm shift in our education system and the worldwide best teaching practices. He emphasized on the importance of parents-teachers involvement.

Dr. Manjushree Palit emphasized the role of self-awareness and emotional well-being of teachers in coping with challenging and stressful situations in school settings. It is also important that parents and teachers engage in a discussion with students on how to handle failures just as they discuss how to achieve success in school education system. Teaching practices should not only focus on enhancing academic growth, but also encourage emotional growth and social responsibility among students.

Some of the eminent schools that participated were Ramesh Kumar Silwal, CEO Golden Gate International College, Budha Neelkanta, Pentagon, KVM, Atharva Business School, St Mary, Kantipur College, Siddhartha School, KIST College, Presidency College, Rainbow International Boarding School, Everest International High School to name a few.

Teaching, especially at school level, is an intrinsically complex discipline since it involves dealing with children and catering to their multiple needs of learning. Some students might be more inclined to learn from the conventional book teaching methods while others may be predisposed to imbibe  from practical hands-on experiences. At the same time, there are special children who need a completely different approach to learning and teaching. Keeping these factors in mind, JIBS is working with teachers to devise and impart better modalities of teaching based on psychological, social and development understanding of children.

Among a series of courses and programmes offered for school teachers by JIBS are Stress Management, Performance Enhancement, Assertive Discipline, Positive Psychology, Learning Disabilities, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Anger Management Program, Handling Troubled Children/Teens, &Developmental Needs of Children: Preschool to Higher Secondary.
