Our film and new media programme combines the theory of film appreciation with hands-on training in filmmaking, direction, production, screenplay and cinematography. We synthesise theory and practice to construct reflective, mindful and critical practice. Our pedagogy is inspired by a liberal arts approach to the humanities, the expressive arts and the social sciences. We want our students to become practitioners, but we also want to empower them to take decisions, make policy and to reflect on practice — their own as well as prevalent practices in the industry. In the words of Philip E. Agre (1997), our pedagogy stands with “one foot planted in the craft work of design” and “the other foot planted in the reflexive work of critique”.
