Journalism is central to everyday life. From the radio or print media to social media, journalism has grown as a socio-cultural and political institution that can connect as well as influence the masses. Journalists conceptualise stories, report them, and help shape the way we see ourselves and the world. The art, craft, and power of storytelling requires that journalists be observant and creative, be it in the sports stadium, the war zone, or in the streets. The steady rise in content consumption by the people has led to a growing demand for journalists, particularly in India. As such, journalism studies is steadily emerging as a sought after academic discipline.
Jindal School of Journalism & Communication (JSJC) is a multidisciplinary school with a dynamic curriculum that seeks to harness the creative potential of a new generation of journalism and communication professionals.
The programme includes a unique variety of papers, an industry benchmarked curriculum, along with a comprehensive and contemporary learning pedagogy. The real-world focus and interdisciplinary nature of the programme prepare students for a variety of academic and industrial endeavours. Students of JSJC explore the world and global culture, as they broaden their network by engaging with media houses, broadcasting units, and the print media through immersive internship opportunities from the very first semester.
At JSJC, your coursework is not limited to journalism and communication. Students are encouraged to choose multidisciplinary courses in history, political science, and more, by pursuing cross-listed electives across schools of JGU. As students engage in a variety of subjects, they learn to understand, examine and navigate the world through multiple perspectives.
We are a young school, but we constantly refine our course offerings and ask whether we can do better—whether we are preparing our students today for the professional challenges they will face tomorrow. Refining the curriculum to keep pace with the ever-changing demands of the world of media provides our students with the skills and experiences they need to be successful.
Students are mentored by faculty who are among India’s best practitioners and scholars of journalism. They have reshaped our understanding of various fields of study. Many have written books that are taught in schools across the country. JSJC is supplemented by a superb group of adjuncts who work at leading news outlets.
Our students are pioneers. They create a rich, vibrant community. They come to us with curiosity, a passion for excellence, and a commitment not just to study but to question the status quo-the underpinnings of good journalism.
We encourage our budding media professionals to constantly apply their learnings to the real world by participating in multiple internship opportunities from the very first semester. Internships with leading media houses, newspapers, magazines, broadcast stations, think tanks, NGOs and other organisations form a core element of our curriculum.
Studio at JSJC
JSJC students receive extensive training in radio and video/television-related production skills. They are expected to be absolutely hands-on with all the studio equipment, so that they emerge as professionals who are as much at home reporting on the ground as they are in the studio. Students learn to pitch, conceive, design and produce programmes as they work with cutting-edge equipment at high-definition studios:
