The Centre for Afghanistan Studies organised a movie screening of Wajma – A Love Story Shattered by Honour at the Global Auditorium in Spring 2025. The screening of Wajma: An Afghan Love Story provided a compelling exploration of love, gender, and social morality in contemporary Afghanistan. Directed by Barmak Akram, the film follows Wajma, a young woman from Kabul, whose relationship with Mustafa takes a tragic turn when she becomes pregnant. Rather than offering protection and compassion, her family and society condemn her for dishonour. Mustafa abandons her, and her father’s reaction reflects the suffocating hold of patriarchal honour. The film did not present heroes or a happy ending; instead, it confronted audiences with the cruel consequences of social hypocrisy and double standards that punish women but excuse men. Students described how Wajma’s silent strength and dignity made the story deeply emotional and realistic. The discussion that followed focused on how traditional norms continue to restrict women’s autonomy and how art can serve as a catalyst for empathy and reflection. The event highlighted the power of cinema to reveal uncomfortable truths and to promote conversations about gender justice and equality. Through this screening, the Centre for Afghanistan Studies encouraged critical thought about the human cost of rigid social codes and the enduring courage of Afghan women.
