Virtual Talk & Photo Exhibition with Munisa Rashid

The Centre for Afghanistan Studies organized a Virtual Talk and Photo Exhibition titled “Afghanistan: People and Places” with Munisa Rashid on 4th August 2022, from 18:45 to 20:45.

About The Speaker:

Munisa Rashid is an Afghan photographer and humanitarian worker. She currently serves as the Senior Communications Officer at the Swedish Committee for Afghanistan. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Law and Political Science from Gawharshad University, Kabul. Through her lens, she tries to capture the beauty of Afghanistan and to tell its stories that have not been told. In pursuit of that goal, she took a leap into working in photojournalism to show a different image of Afghanistan to the world. Recently, she travelled to Paktika province in Southeastern Afghanistan to bring humanitarian aid to communities impacted by the earthquake.

About The Event:

During the session, Munisa shared her experiences of documenting everyday life across Afghanistan, foregrounding the strength, resilience, and the quite beauty of its people amidst decades of conflict. She discussed her experience working as a woman photographer, and how it has not been an easy road and reflected on the power of visual storytelling in shaping narratives about her country. The exhibition featured a handpicked selection of her photographs capturing Afghanistan’s diverse landscapes, vibrant communities, and the little moments of hope that she experienced while in Afghanistan. The event concluded with a Q&A session, that led to a lively discussion expanding on the themes of representation, gender, and the role of art as part of humanitarian work.
