The workshop was attended by several distinguished speakers from the South Asia region including Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Former UN Under Secretary General and Former Minister of State for External Affairs, Mr. PC Sharma, Member, National Human Rights Commission, Honorable Justice Mr. Umesh C Banerjee, Ms. Hina Jilani, Former UN Special Rapporteur, Mr. Virendra Dayal, Former Member, National Human Rights Commission, India, Dr. Kamal Hossain, Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh, Mr. Kalyan Shreshta, Judge, Supreme Court of Nepal and Vice President SAARC Law, Dr. Mario Gomez, Member, Law Commission, Sri Lanka, Dr. Ahmad Hakim, Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission, among others. A draft action plan and a Sonipat Declaration were adopted. (Text of the Declaration is available in Appendix 2). A report was also published by the Centre advocating the creation of suitable mechanisms for protection and promotion of human rights in South Asia.
