JGU is a research-intensive University, and the PhD Programme is designed keeping in mind the need and vision of Jindal Global Law School’s aspiration to be at the forefront of cutting-edge research. Keeping in view the vision of the O.P. Jindal Global (Institution of Eminence Deemed To Be University) to provide globalized legal education, the PhD course work aims to equip our PhD students with skills to conduct research on legal issues from a global perspective, enabling them to think, innovate and apply their knowledge to emerging global legal issues. LLM with at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade. Professional qualification such as CA/ ICWA/ CFA/ CS (both 5 year integrated or 3 years after graduation) with minimum 55% marks.
Master’s degree in a discipline relevant to the proposed research with at least 55% marks or equivalent grade.
Applicants with more than 3 years industry/ teaching/ practicing/ managerial/ professional experience will be given preference.
Relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/Differently-Abled categories or for those who had obtained their Master’s degree prior to 19th September, 1991. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures.

Step 2: Entrance Examination RAT (Research Aptitude Test)
Note: Entrance Examination exemption details refer to JGU PhD Regulation Clause 9.
Step 3: Interview with the School Doctoral Committee (SDC).
The duration is for a minimum of 3 years and maximum 6 years. As per the JGU rules, the minimum & maximum period of study and research shall not be less than 3 years from the date of enrolment (36 months) & 6 years (72 months) respectively from the date of provisional registration of the candidate. However, in case the performance of the research scholar has been exceptionally good and proven through substantial publications, the period can be reduced by six months.
The fellowship scheme is limited to two full time PhD students from JGLS. Please find below details of the JGU fellowship scheme applicable with effect from Feb 01, 2020:

A candidate admitted for full-time Ph.D. programme will be positioned as Junior Research Fellow (JRF) in the first year, Research Fellow (RF) in the second year and Senior Research Fellow (SRF) in the third year of his/ her Ph.D. registration. Fellowship for JRF/ RF/ SRF will be for 3 years only.

A full-time research scholar shall attend classes on a regular basis till completion of the course work, not exceeding one and half years. A part-time/ sponsored research scholar shall spend a minimum of 7 days during a semester to seek professional guidance from his/ her Supervisor/ Co-Supervisor and/ or avail the library/ laboratory facilities. University Doctoral Committee(UDC) has powers to allow an overseas candidate to complete Residency from home city, provided the University has some kind of collaboration with the home University/ Institute concerned.
Course Work
All candidates admitted to the PhD Programme are required to complete a course work in the first 12 months in case of the full-time programme and 18 months in the case of the part-time programme. The course work comprises both credit and audit courses. The minimum credit load is of 11 credits and the maximum 16. The maximum credit load may go up depending upon the school’s requirements.
