A candidate for the degree of Master of Laws (LL.M) must be in good academic standing and comply with the following requirements.

A. Course Work

  • A student must complete two full semesters or their equivalent in residence at the Jindal Global Law School or at a foreign university Law School (applicable to outgoing international exchange students). Upon enrolling in the JGLS LLM programme, student cohorts are assigned a faculty advisor for help in choosing courses of study. Regular class attendance is compulsory. It is mandatory for LLM students to have minimum 90% attendance in each semester to be eligible to sit exams and submit assignments. Faculty members teaching LLM have the freedom to impose stricter attendance standards. Excessive absences may affect the grade given in a course. The student must request for leave of absence by writing to the Director of Post Graduate Legal Studies specifying the reason for the requested leave and anticipated return date. Student can only go on leave for a maximum period of 5 days upon the approval of the Director. For further information on Attendance and Leave of Absence, see clause 9 of JGU Academic Regulations. A Student Handbook containing academic regulations will be given to the student upon admission to the LLM programme.
 
  • In some courses/ electives offered in the Jindal Global Law School, LLM students will be enrolled with BALLB/LLB students. In such cases, LLM students may be given additional assignments proportionate to their advanced standing.
 
  •  A student must complete with a passing grade (B+) and a minimum of 28 credit hours, including 12 credits of courses in the approved programme of study. It must include completion of all courses and a dissertation of publishable quality under the supervision of a faculty member of the Law School, approved by the Director of Post Graduate Legal Studies. LLM students should maintain good academic standing by maintain a minimum of B+ GPA (in each course and overall) and meeting on time the deadlines in the course work, seminars, research paper writing. If the Director of Post Graduate Legal Studies determines that a student is not making satisfactory progress in course work, then with the approval of the Dean, may issue academic warning and may even place the student on academic probation. In such cases it is mandatory for students to regain satisfactory progress. All students must satisfactorily complete required core courses on ‘Legal Research Methodology’ and ‘Comparative Public Law’ and  four foundational courses on ‘Law and Justice in Globalizing world’, ‘Introduction to Corporate & Financial Law’, ‘Law of International Trade’ & ‘General Principles of IPR’.

  • With the approval of the Director of the CPGLS, students may choose to take one course in other Schools of JGU towards the fulfillment of LLM course credit requirements. The entire cross listed courses from other Schools will be available as electives to LLM students. The course teacher of the respective host School will decide the enrollment of students to the course. Assessment of students’ performance will be governed by the evaluation criteria of the host School.

Research Assistantships/Studentships with Research Centres in JGU

LLM students will have opportunity to engage and interact with scholars and research institutions around the world to hone their research skills. As India’s first global and research-driven law school, JGU has a number of research centres including the following that are relevant to the LLM programme. Students of LLM are encouraged to associate with research activities in the following research centres of the University.

Students of LLM also have the freedom to affiliate with research centres established in other Schools of JGU – Global Business School, School of International Affairs and School of Government and Public Policy – that are relevant to the LLM programme and its focus on interdisciplinary studies.

B. Teaching Pedagogy and Methodology

  • The class format will combine lecture, discussions, seminar, clinics and tutorials with a primary focus on seminars and workshops. Students are expected to prepare for and participate in class discussion on a regular basis. Students are expected to review the delineated course materials in advance of each class and lead the class through presentations. Assignments will be given to students and they will present their thoughts on the materials and guide discussion. The LL.M programme is developed to integrate Indian and global perspectives on aspects of corporate, international trade and intellectual property rights and emphasizing on international, transnational and comparative approach to research in the aforementioned fields of law. The programme aims to equip students with skills for global research enabling them to adapt, innovate and apply their knowledge to international legal issues.

 

  • CPGLS at JGU will endeavor to organize eminent professors/scholars/practitioners lectures through video-link.

 

  • CPGLS also proposes to initiate a weekly/bi monthly seminar or guest speaker series relevant to the course work. Students shall compulsorily take part in such activities.

C. Method of Assessment and Evaluation

To receive LLM degree from the Jindal Global University (JGU), a student must successfully complete two academic terms or its equivalent in residence at a foreign Law School; and complete with a passing grade a minimum of 28 credit hours, which must include passing of all approved courses and a dissertation under the faculty supervision. The teaching methods may include lectures, seminars, tutorials, fieldwork, and clinics. The evaluation of students will be broadly based on continuous evaluation by the faculty of the course and a combination of examinations and research paper. Students should strictly adhere to timelines for submission of assignments, failing which their papers would be disapproved resulting in a failing grade. Generally, Course grades will depend upon class attendance, classroom participation, assignments, tutorials, presentation of essay to the class and an original research essay. Student workshops and seminars will be part of the coursework. It is mandatory for students to actively participate in seminars and share their work.

D. Dissertation and Dissertation Writing Policy

A 3 credit component of Dissertation has been conceived as a compulsory requirement for the students of LLM programme, over and above the course work. This dissertation will provide an opportunity to plan an original work, collect and analyze data and write up a project under the guidance of the supervisors. It is expected that this research work will provide them with a substantial experience of conducting a systematic independent research in a substantive area of study relevant to their areas of interest. Through different aspects of a research process, the students will learn to conceptualize a problem, identify sources of different kinds and also understand the potentialities and limitations of certain research methods. They are also expected to learn logical and analytical skills that are essential in interpreting and explaining data. Dissertation policy will be circulated to LLM students upon joining the course.
