Jindal School of International Affairs enables new global career paths

Established in 2011, the Jindal School of International Affairs (JSIA) of O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) has created viable career opportunities for its graduating students in a diverse range of sectors. JSIA has filled the void in the study of international relations in India, which had been neglected precisely because universities were unable to show a clear career path in world politics and economics.

Before the formation of JSIA, the only options available to those keenly interested in international relations and related disciplines used to be the Indian civil services or academia. JSIA has dramatically transformed this landscape by opening up a wide plethora of jobs and internships for its students in a variety of prestigious organisations – governmental and nongovernmental, public and private, within India and abroad.

Commenting on the wide array of institutions hiring JSIA’s students, the Dean of the School, Dr. Sreeram Chaulia commented that “today, I can say with satisfaction that JSIA’s contribution to international studies is not just limited to the prolific scholarly publications and opinion-shaping viewpoints of its faculty members, but it also extends to giving students a vision and a support system to find suitable careers. Our dedicated career support division and the references of our extraordinarily well connected faculty members have facilitated opportunities for students in areas such as human rights, humanitarian relief, peace and conflict resolution, risk analysis, economic development, diplomatic service etc. Our illustrious alumni increase the strength of our industry relations manifold. As JSIA grows as an institution year-on-year, so does our alumni base and this in turn produces life-transforming career opportunities for new students stepping into our portals.”

In the context of JSIA creating a whole new realm of possibilities for young people dreaming of a career at the United Nations, multinational corporations, think tanks or in the Indian Foreign Service, the Vice Chancellor of JGU, Professor C. Raj Kumar, says “the process of making informed decisions relating to careers in International Affairs is the first step in the direction of being a responsible citizen. At JSIA, we are moulding young people to think of big global problems and how India and Indian institutions can contribute to solving them. We are forging versatile international affairs professionals and offering hope to the youth who want to get into this field but were hitherto held back due to fear that it does not offer any fulfilling jobs. The track record of our students in JSIA shows that a completely alternative career path is achievable with the right kind of guidance and coaching by faculty members and professional career advisers.”

Over the years, JSIA’s alumni have found rewarding careers in a long list of institutions that require young talented individuals who are well versed in global economic and political issues to inform policymakers. JSIA’s unique postgraduate programme, the Masters in Diplomacy, Law & Business

(M.A. DLB), recognises the symbiotic relationship between international relations, international law and international business. The students who are graduating from this School are educated on the basis of an innovative teaching pedagogy that fosters interdisciplinary learning – a hallmark of JGU.

JSIA also offers a unique B.A. (Honours) programme in Global Affairs, which was launched in 2015, and which is training and empowering young minds to take up high-profile careers in diverse sectors of world affairs. JGU empowers its students to pursue fulfilling careers across different facets of the development sector as well as the corporate world.

Prior to finding full-time jobs, the students of JSIA benefit immensely by the exposure that they have received through internships and career opportunities in national and international organisations, corporate houses, news media and publishing houses, NGOs, think tanks, consultancies, ministries of the Government of India and state governments.
