The uniqueness of the B.A. (Hons) Political Science degree programme at Jindal School of International Affairs (JSIA) is its focus on the lived political experiences i.e., its relevance to the real world apart from the study of conventional theoretical frameworks. Politics whether understood as an art or science is comprised of myriad forces shaped by actors, ideas and events on the ground.  This degree aims to train students so that they may integrate successfully with all manifestations of politics. This includes local, state, national and international spheres. We pay particular attention to the role of leadership by various public figures, of political discourse, the role of civil society, social media platforms as well as grassroots participation. This degree programme is diverse in that it offers courses on economics, sociology, history and philosophy with the result that students will have a holistic and well-rounded understanding of political affairs.

The conventional undergraduate degree in Political Science fails to consider contemporary political developments especially regionally. The pedagogy has generally reflected the priorities and perspectives of the western world.  The rich field of Indian Political Thought is a unique component of this programme which highlights the role of Indian intellectuals and thinkers, as well as those from other developing countries. The foreign affairs option will give JSIA’s Political Science students a special edge, as no other undergraduate degree programme in India offers so much variety of coursework on international and regional politics. Students can learn in a comparative format about the same issue. For e.g.: the issue of the rise of nationalism and populist politics across different countries. This would develop a more thorough and sophisticated understanding.

1. Geneva School of Diplomacy, Switzerland to earn a second Bachelors’ Degree in Global and International Studies through academic collaboration with JSIA. Also, JSIA hosts India’s first Taiwan Education Centre, which was established by National Tsing Hua University of Taiwan with the backing of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of China (Taiwan). The Centre is directed by Taiwanese specialists in Mandarin Chinese language and imparts beginners, intermediate and advanced level Mandarin lessons to students from JGU.

Political Science as a versatile social science degree leads to a variety of career paths. Political scientists study governing systems, political development and political theory. While pursuing this degree in Political Science from JSIA, students will not only learn about politics and government, they will also gain valuable analytical, communication and research skills. The curriculum of the BAPS includes a mandatory guided internship during each semester break. With these internships our political science students can explore career opportunities in the sectors like Government, Academia, Media, Non-Governmental Organizations, Public Relations, Think Tanks, Advocacy groups, international organizations, consultancies, and others. While the B.A. (Hons.) Global Affairs provides students with a width of topics ranging across international affairs, law and business, the B.A. (Hons.) degree is a fresh look at politics at both the international and regional level. There are new courses that have both a theoretical and practical relevance for the real world. Over the course of study students acquire an in-depth command of their subject matter with the ability to shine not only in academic arena but also apply their learnings towards actual spheres of political life.

A valid entrance exam score is a mandatory requirement. JSAT is one of the options. Other tests like SAT and ACT are accepted too.

JGU Admissions department grant incoming students their “initial awards” based on following criterion:

I. Merit Score: This consists of three elements: XII Board Scores (50%), JSAT or Standardized Examination Results (25%), and Faculty Interview Score (25%).

II. Income Eligibility: The maximum income i.e., combined annual incomes of the parents should be no more than INR 20 Lakhs for the B.A. Global Affairs, B.A. Political Science and M.A. Diplomacy, Law and Business (MADLB) programs. These maximum eligibility thresholds will be reviewed by 1 March of each year. It may be revised with consent of the Vice Chancellor, the Dean of the respective programme, and the Director of Admissions and Outreach.

Separately from the initial award, the JSIA Scholarship Committee revokes aid from or rewards aid to students on the basis of the following criterion:

I. Academic Performance: The maintenance of a minimum CGPA of 5.5 is required to be eligible for aid (funds permitting) or to keep one’s award. If a student’s CGPA falls below 5.5, they may face academic probation with the possible revoking of their aid. That aid will be re-allocated to more deserving candidates. The toppers or top two performers in each program will be given priority in the awarding of aid.

II. Scholarly Conduct: Apart from CGPA, students also must also exemplify decent conduct. Specifically, they must not have any cases pending with the unfair means committee or disciplinary committee.

III. Changed Circumstances: Occasionally, the Scholarship Committee will consider a case where there has been a drastic change in the circumstances of a family such as a death, divorce etc. which has impacted the annual household income. Such cases will be recommended for an initial award by the Scholarship Committee.

Please note that the primary criterion for the award of aid by the Scholarship Committee is merit.

Yes. There will be a mock legislative assembly as this programme is about understanding the lived political experiences and how politics is enacted every day. Legislature is an important arena of politics and it is crucial to understand the role of political leaders, their political beliefs and law making for the nation.
