Course Curriculum: B.A. (Hons.) Global Affairs

1st Year

During the first year of coursework, the focus shall be on ensuring that the students acquire strong foundations in the social sciences. They will examine classic texts in Philosophy, focus on key concepts in Economics, and review the main outlines of global politics in History. Most significantly, they will rigorously practice expressing themselves both in writing and in speech to learn how to effectively communicate their ideas.

2nd Year

In the second year, JSIA’s faculty will train students in developing solid research and analytical skills in order to facilitate them in eventually taking control of their own education. The faculty would like them to find something that they are passionate about and proceed to specialise. Students’ increasingly advanced coursework will both challenge and support them as they start examining how politics plays out in specific regions of the world. They will also be moving from the general to the more specific as they enter into new sub-disciplines such as Foreign Policy Analysis, Conflict Studies, and Development Studies.

3rd Year

By the third year, students will be deeply immersed in the intricacies of contemporary global politics. Central issues shall be examined and debated in detail; How do individual international organisations work? How do diplomats operate on a day-to-day basis? Are changes in military technology fundamentally reshaping the global balance of power? Under what circumstances is international trade a benefit to societies? What is the role of media in today’s networked world?

4th Year

As students transition into the fourth year, they gain considerable theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of global politics. With this base and interest, student can choose one of the two pathways available: (1). They can either opt for electives from JSIA or/and other Schools of JGU or they can take a combination of 3 electives and independent research study under the supervision of a faculty member. (2). Alternatively, students have the option of undertaking the study abroad programme by applying for our semester exchange programme with partner Universities.

Programme Modalities:

The B.A. (Hons.) Global Affairs is a 4-year programme. It is a residential, full-time, five-day-a-week degree programme. Students graduate with B.A. (Hons.) (G.A.) at the end of 4 years.

Foreign Language training is an essential requirement for the residential programme and language classes are offered throughout the duration of the programme. Students have the option of choosing from among Spanish, German, French and Mandarin.

Students can choose to continue at JSIA after graduation to pursue their Masters in Diplomacy, Law and Business (M.A. DLB) programme offered by JSIA and can become eligible to apply to American universities for a Master’s degree.
The coursework at JSIA can be supplemented with an international exchange in a different part of the world, which will provide students with the unique opportunity to experience diverse societies and distinct political systems.
