Dr. Gurpreet Singh is an Associate Professor and Associate Dean (International Collaborations) at the Jindal School of Government and Public Policy (JSGP), O.P. Jindal Global University, Sonepat. His research focuses on public finance, agrarian economy, rural employment, and the political economy of development in the Global South.
Before joining JSGP, Dr. Singh was associated with several prestigious research institutions and policy think tanks. He served as Thematic Lead (Agriculture) at the Centre for Budget and Governance Accountability (CBGA), New Delhi, where he led major projects on public investment in Indian agriculture. His professional experience also includes work with the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) and the Centers for International Studies Trust (established by the Columbia Water Centre), focusing on issues such as the fiscal framework in India's mining sector and agricultural and farm economy policies. Additionally, he has authored research reports for esteemed organizations, including the National Labour Institute (NLI) and the International Labour Organization (ILO), covering topics such as social security, gender pay gaps, and evaluations of government schemes and programs.
Dr. Singh holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, where his doctoral research examined rural non-farm employment in Punjab and Bihar. He also earned an M.Phil. in Applied Economics from the Centre for Development Studies, Trivandrum, focusing on the processes and determinants of depeasantization in Punjab. As a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the University of Cambridge, he contributed to sustainable farm policy research.
He has published in leading academic journals, including Economic and Political Weekly, Social Change, Millennial Asia, Environmental Research Letters, and Agricultural Economic Research Review. His work also appears in edited volumes, policy reports, and media platforms such as Down to Earth, The Wire, Scroll.in, and India Development Review.
He regularly collaborates with civil society organizations, policymakers, and international scholars to influence policy debates on employment, sustainable agriculture, and agrarian distress.
