Dr. Gurpreet Singh is an Associate Professor at the Jindal School of Government and Public Policy (JSGP), O.P. Jindal Global University, Sonepat. His research focuses on public finance, the agrarian economy, rural employment, and the political economy of development in the Global South.
Prior to joining JSGP, he was associated with leading research institutions and policy think tanks. He served as Thematic Lead (Agriculture) at the Centre for Budget and Governance Accountability (CBGA), New Delhi, where he led major projects on public investment in Indian agriculture. He has also worked with the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) on issues related to fiscal frameworks in India’s mining sector. He has also authored research reports for organisations such as the V.V Giri National Labour Institute (VVGNLI) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) on social security, gender pay gaps, and evaluations of government programmes. As a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the University of Cambridge, while working with the Centre for International Projects Trust, he contributed to research on sustainable farm policy. He regularly collaborates with civil society organisations, policymakers, and international scholars on issues of employment, sustainable agriculture, and agrarian distress.
Dr. Singh holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, and an M.Phil. in Applied Economics from the Centre for Development Studies, Trivandrum. His doctoral research examined rural farm and non-farm employment in Punjab and Bihar, while his M.Phil. focused on depeasantization in Punjab.
He has published in reputed journals such as Economic and Political Weekly, Agrarian South, Social Change, Millennial Asia, Environmental Research Letters, and Agricultural Economic Research Review, and writes for media platforms on contemporary issues.
