Background:
Jindal School of Art and Architecture is a unique multidisciplinary school that promotes the best of global pedagogy in the fields of planning, architecture, development, design and sustainability. Run by academics trained at best universities around the world, the school is focused on its most vital assets – the students. The school envisions to revolutionise the philosophy, methods and processes of teaching available in the field and offered in the country today. Architects, historians, engineers, geographers, artists, conservationists work in unison here, providing a nuanced but rigorous grounding to students which opens up frontiers of their imagination. The school is committed to developing students as makers and builders through project-based learning that makes them industry-ready. At the same time, it allows students to them design their own curriculum, helping them to learn by doing, using cities and villages as their classrooms, embedding them into deep reading of key texts.
Currently the JSAA trains students through 4 academic pathways/programs.
- Architecture
- Interior Design
- Immersive Digital Environments
- Community & Urban Development
In addition to these major program areas, students at the JSAA are also trained in an additional – minor area of concentration.
Minor Requirements:
If a student declares a minor area of study, the minimum credits required to complete the minor typically range from 24-30 credits.
The JSAA Internship Initiative
The JSAA internship program is part of JSAA’s larger educational philosophy to undo the distance between making/building and learning that is characteristic of design and professional education in India particularly and the world over generally. Making and building are central to the teaching that happens at the JSAA. Unlike most schools of design in the world, JSAA steps away from “hypothetical” projects. The school stresses that in order to produce professionals who are first and foremost adept at building and making, learners have to build and make constantly. To make this a reality the JSAA works on a model in which it brings practitioners into the school its ateliers. Approximately 60% of the curricula at the JSAA is centered on these ateliers in which students learn to make and build through projects. Two principles guide every atelier at the JSAA.
- All projects done in the Atelier are to be, as far as possible, real projects with clients, others consultants. Thus ensuring that the outcomes are not “in paper or theory” but actual objects, buildings, systems etc.
- The Atelier itself is imagined as a modified guild, which has various levels of expertise (students from various years are in it together along with faculty from different disciplines)
The result of these principles is firstly, the collapse of the arbitrary divide between the “field” and the academia, and secondly that students of the JSAA are field ready.
The internship initiative at the JSAA which starts after foundation year at the college aims to further integrate the learnings of the field and the academia. Students are mandatorily required to complete two internships during their course of study. Each Internship is for a minimum of 4 weeks extendable to 8 weeks in each case. The internship cycle starts after their second year at school.
Intern Profile:
A typical prospective intern from the JSAA would be entering into the third year of their program have had completed anywhere between 40% to 75% of their training in any of the 4 academic pathways outlined earlier. In addition to this, the prospective intern would also be trained in one minor area of study. Given below is a table of skill and learnings acquired by learners at the time of their

In addition to the above coursework, each prospective intern would also have completed significant coursework in their chosen minor area of work (listed above).
Internship Tie-Ups.
The unique curricula of the JSAA, along with its interdisciplinarity, its flexibility and most importantly its minor programs, opens up newer avenues of internships for our students.
Instead of being limited to traditional avenues such as architectural and or design firms, our internships encourage designers to work in areas where not only their design skills can be utilized but they can emerge as game changers in the development of our built environment.
The internship opportunities at the JSAA are a continuously evolving. The JSAA maintains a continually updating database of internship opportunities as well as tie up with organizations.
