In his career of more than more than three and a half decades in the visual medium, Somnath has worked as Director, Director of Photography, Editor, Scriptwriter and in production-oriented activities in over one hundred productions including feature films, documentaries, music videos, television series and commercials, primarily in the United States of America and India and in many other countries of the World.
In 2002, Somnath wrote and directed the critically acclaimed, award-winning film, “Leela”, his debut feature. This film was shot entirely in Los Angeles, and starred Dimple Kapadia, Vinod Khanna and Deepti Naval. Music was by Jagjit Singh to lyrics by Gulzar. Among the other feature films Somnath has directed are “Faisla”, starring Rati Agnihotri and Indira Krishnan, "Diploma" starring Rasika Duggal and Jaya Bachchan, "Gora", starring Swati Sengupta, Prabhat Raghunandan, and “Like I Love You”, a film shot in London for Red Chilies Entertainment that was produced by MTV India.
Among his 100+ hours of Television work, Somnath has also directed a 26-episode serial based on Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s novel, GORA. This was telecast on Doordarshan’s National Network
Somnath has also been teaching for almost two decades and counts amongst his students, stalwarts such as Shashank Khaitan, Abhishek Jain, Nitin Baid, Rajshri Deshpande, Rajkumar Rao, Jaideep Ahlawat, Divyendu Sharma, Vijay Verma among others.
