Oishik Sircar is Associate Professor, Jindal Global Law School, Fellow, Centre for India Australia Studies, Jindal Global University, and Associate Member, Institute for International Law and the Humanities, Melbourne Law School. Oishik completed an LLB from ILS Law College, Savitribai Phule Pune University, an LLM from the Faculty of Law, University of Toronto, and a PhD from Melbourne Law School, The University of Melbourne. Oishik was previously a Teaching Fellow at Melbourne Law School (2012-2015), an Assistant Professor at the Jindal Global Law School (2009-2012) and a Research Fellow at the Centre for Human Rights and Citizenship Studies, National University of Juridical Sciences (2008-2009). In 2015, Oishik served as Junior Faculty at Harvard Law School’s Institute for Global Law and Policy Workshop. As a human rights law researcher and activist, Oishik has worked with Amnesty International and the South Asia Human Rights Documentation Centre and has been closely associated with the sex workers’ and queer rights movements in India, and the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israeli apartheid globally.

Oishik’s broad research interests are in the areas of cultural studies of law, queer theory, postcolonial feminism, visual cultures, Marxism and, law and social movements. Some of Oishik’s writings have appeared in Childhood, Osgoode Hall Law Journal, Feminist Studies, Economic and Political Weekly, No Foundations, and Human Rights Defender, and Unbound: Harvard Journal of the Legal Left, among others. Oishik is the co-editor of New Intimacies, Old Desires: Law, Culture and Queer Politics in Neoliberal Times (Zubaan and University of Chicago Press, 2017), and has authored Violent Modernities: Cultural Lives of Law in the New India (contracted with Oxford University Press; forthcoming in 2020). Oishik’s article “Spectacles of Emancipation: Readings Rights Differently in India’s Legal Discourse” (2013) won the Hart Article Prize from the UK Socio-Legal Studies Association. Oishik has co-directed two documentary films, one of which – We Are Foot Soldiers (2011) – won the 3rd Prize at the Jeevika Asia Documentary Festival in New Delhi. Oishik is the co-editor of the Jindal Global Law Review, sits on the editorial board of the Indian Law Review, and composes "Extratextualities" for the Socio-Legal Review, a regular section featuring detailed article-length interviews with scholar-activist-jurisprudent-aesthetes.
