Public Discussion by Mr. Richard Mitry, Co-founder and Partner Mitry Lawyers and Mr. Sarim Naved, Partner, Srivastava, Naved and Parashar Partners on “Developments in Defamation Law: A Comparison between India and Australia”
On 27 April 2017, Mr. Mitry and Mr. Naved participated in a discussion moderated by Director of the Centre for India Australia Studies, Assistant Professor Shaun Star, on “Developments in Defamation Law: A Comparison between India and Australia”. It was observed that while the law attempts to strike a balance between an individual’s freedom of speech and a right to reputation, each jurisdiction has adopted a very different in trying to achieve this. Indeed, the incidence of criminal law defamation cases is much higher in India than in most other countries, including Australia. Speakers also spoke about the developments in technology and how this is shaping defamation law.
