On 5 October 2016, The Centre of India Australia Studies was pleased to partner with Deakin University to organise a productive Roundtable discussion at the Australian High Commission in New Delhi. Attended by legal luminaries from around the country, participants engaged in an interesting dialogue about the existing challenges that exist in our respective legal systems
As the Roundtable was attended by Judges, Vice Chancellor's, Professors, Senior Advocates, Government Officials and Partners of corporate law firms, a diverse and balanced range of options were shared on topical legal issues. Concerns about access to justice, reforms to civil procedure, legal education and liberalisation of legal services were discussed during the session.
Australia's Deputy High Commissioner, Mr. Chris Elstoft, introduced the session by emphasising the potential for closer engaging and learning between Indian and Australian lawyers. Following this, Professor Gopalan (Dean of Deakin University Law School), Professor Ranbir Singh (Vice Chancellor of National Law University Delhi) and Professor C. Raj Kumar (Vice Chancellor of O. P. Jindal Global University and Dean of Jindal Global Law School) moderated the interesting panel sessions which followed. Finally, Shaun Star (Executive Director of the Centre for India Australia Studies and Assistant Professor & Assistant Dean of Jindal Global Law School) summed up the sessions and delivered the vote of thanks.
The roundtable discussions have set the scene for a conference on India-Australia legal ties which will be hosted in December 2016.
