Times are urgent, let us slow down’ sums up how I feel about the world, lately!
I was in my 4th semester at the Jindal School of International Affairs when I applied for a semester exchange programme. I was selected to go to William Paterson University to study my 5th semester there.
I couldn’t be more grateful for the semester exchange programme I took which made me learn and grow in such a multicultural and stimulating environment. While it is a blessing to live in the United States, it is also a challenge. My social and friendly personality helped me a lot in the adaptation process. I learned how difficult life actually is and how hard it is to manage your resources on your own without your parents maintaining you.
Going to William Paterson University was a great experience. I got to learn a lot in the field of diplomacy and foreign policy. New York trip was a bonus point with the whole of the USA semester exchange experience. I visited the Statue of Liberty, UN headquarters, 9/11 Memorial, Colgate Clock, One World Tower, Whitney Museum, and had a ferry ride viewing the Brooklyn Bridge. I also had a Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, and Cornell tour. The comparison of Harry Potters Hogwarts with Harvard University is actually right. I could see the resemblance when I stepped into the varsity. My tour guide was Harvard’s student which was a plus point to know the inside details. I discovered great historical places and had amazing seafood. I also saw an improvisation of comedy and last but not least saw a Broadway in the Boston Opera House.
The last few months have been incredible for me. It has given me so much more than I could have ever imagined. Meeting friends from different parts of the world, learning about their cultures and traditions has been an amazing experience. I got endless love, had insane fun and now I am back with a bagful of beautiful memories. I am glad that I got this magnificent opportunity for a semester exchange program. It was such a delightful experience. I feel blessed to have come to William Paterson University and am extremely lucky to have made such amazing friends here!
In terms of academics, I took the maximum number of courses and involved myself in co-curricular activities. I took up courses in Social Psychology, Cross-Cultural Psychology, Political Psychology and courses related to Gender and Identity. The international exposure makes one a better person to face challenges of the corporate world. My advice to all exchange students is to stay open-minded and to always see the brighter side. Take the opportunity to be who you always wanted to be. Say yes to as many new things as possible. Live for the moment, make things happen and don’t wait for a miracle.
I thank everyone who has made my time at WPU so special – from my dorm mates and friends to the very helpful WPU’s staff as well as my parents and professors at Jindal School of International Affairs. I encourage everyone to go on an exchange programme, get involved and find a home away from home as I did.
