What is Psychology?

Psychology is the scientific study of human behaviour and mind. It explores how people think, feel, act, and interact with themselves and others. Psychology subjects cover a wide range of topics, such as personality, development, cognition, emotion, motivation, social psychology, health psychology, and clinical psychology.

If you are interested in psychology, you can pursue a bachelor of psychology degree from one of the many BA psychology colleges in India. There are two types of bachelor’s degree in psychology: bachelor of arts in psychology (BA) and bachelor of science in psychology (BSc).

Curriculum

What Makes It Different at JGU

The JSPC BA psychology syllabus employs a multidisciplinary approach, ensuring that students gain a broad understanding of the psychological sciences. One unique aspect of the programme is the opportunity for students to customize or personalize their psychology honours subjects based on their personal interests and long-term professional goals.

In addition to classroom learning, students gain hands-on experience through practicums and internships. The programme also offers access to a new Psychology Research Laboratory and many research centers around the campus, giving interested students ample opportunities to gain experience in experimental design and data collection.
JSPC nurtures the intellectual growth of all students in a culture of learning and exploration. Graduates of the programme are well-prepared to pursue various occupational or academic pursuits and successfully navigate the opportunities and challenges of the future.

The eligibility criteria for the B.A. & BSc in Psychology Honours programme at JSPC requires applicants to have completed the 10+2 level of schooling or its equivalent in humanities, science, or commerce with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from CBSE, ISC, State Boards, IB, Cambridge, and other Govt. recognized Boards. In addition to this, the university also offers Merit-cum-Means Scholarships (MCM) for eligible students, which covers the first-year tuition fee.

The scholarship is awarded based on the income proof of parents, grade XII score, and faculty interview score. The admission process for the programme is holistic and includes a personal statement, supplemental questions, Grade 10 and 12 marks, interview, and JSAT score or equivalent (SAT/ACT/LSAT-India).

The B.A. Honours in Psychology programme at Jindal School of Psychology and Counselling (JSPC) is a four-year undergraduate degree programme that aims to provide a comprehensive and rigorous understanding of psychological theory, experimentation, and practice. The programme consists of a mix of core and specialized courses in the psychological sciences and general elective courses, allowing students to gain broad exposure to fields of study outside of psychology.

The core courses provide a foundational understanding of the field of psychology and its many sub-disciplines. These courses include Introduction to Psychology, Critical Thinking and Academic Writing, Development Across the Lifespan, Statistical Methods of Psychological Research I and II, Cognitive Psychology, Environmental Psychology, Brain and Behaviour, Social Psychology, Educational Psychology, Cross-Cultural Psychology, Research Methods: Quantitative and Qualitative, Counselling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Psychology of Personality, Advanced Writing, and Psychology Essay Paper.

In addition to the core courses, students take specialized courses that introduce psychological topics and findings beyond those offered in core courses, with an emphasis on the field’s major domains, including treatment (e.g., clinical and counselling psychology) and applied (e.g., education, forensic, industrial/organization). The programme also offers skill-based courses, such as Stress Management, Emotional Intelligence, Digital Research Tools in Psychology, and Psychometrics.

To ground theoretical learning in hands-on, real-world experience, all students participate in practicums and skill-based courses. Students must also complete internships during their winter and/or summer breaks, facilitating student engagement with disparate psychological professionals and organizations.

Students have the option to graduate with a B.A. (Hons.) degree or B.A. (Hons.) with Research degree. The latter requires specialized instruction in experimental research design, data collection, and analysis. Students must complete a Thesis during their final (fourth) year of study.

The programme also offers a multi-disciplinary approach, where students can take general elective courses offered by other schools of JGU. If requisite coursework is completed, students may graduate with a disciplinary minor.
