M.Sc. in Counselling Psychology

The two-year M.Sc. degree addresses the significant mental health needs in India by bridging the gap between training and practice. The programme is grounded in the globally recognised scientist-practitioner model, integrating theoretical knowledge, ethical standards, research, and practical training to equip students with comprehensive competencies required for effective counselling practice.

Objective:
  • To develop a programme that fosters intellectual engagement, discovery-based learning, and produces skilled, socially responsible mental health professionals.

  • To address the significant mental health needs in India by bridging the training and practice gap in this critical field.

Framework: This Master's programme is grounded in the globally recognised scientist-practitioner model. It integrates theoretical knowledge, ethical standards, research, and practical training to equip students with the comprehensive competencies required for effective counselling practice. It has been designed keeping in mind two key criteria:

Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 3) of good health and wellbeing. World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation that “there can be no health or sustainable development without mental health”.

The programme is designed to provide:

  1. Skill Development: Prepare students to meet the growing demand for mental health professionals in India, where approximately 1 in 7 individuals require mental health care but are served by only 0.07% of psychologists per 100,000 population (NIMHANS, 2016).
  2. Training and Practice Integration: Ensure a robust educational foundation combined with practical training to bridge the existing training and practice gaps.
Programme Structure

Programme Structure: Each semester is designed to advance knowledge and practice from a beginner to an advanced level of expertise needed for practicing as a Counselling Psychologist.

  1. Core Curriculum: Includes theoretical foundations of counseling, counseling skills, psychotherapy approaches, psychopathology, lifespan development, multicultural counseling, research methodology, ethics, reflective practices, self-care, and supervisory skills.
  2. Practicum Courses: Offer a blend of simulated role plays and real-world experiences through on-campus training, school-based fieldwork, and community-based engagement. Students will participate in rotational practical training, gaining experience across various settings.
  3. Research Component: Students will complete a Dissertation, encouraging critical and exploratory research in counseling psychology.
  4. Electives: Allow students to explore intersections between counseling psychology and other disciplines within the university. Students will be exposed to theoretical, practical, research, and ethical aspects of the field.

Practical Experience: Students will gain hands-on experience at on-campus site (JGU Psychology Lab), school-based settings, and community-based settings. The programme aims to (i) utilise the JGU Psychology Research Lab for mental health screenings and counselling; (ii) collaborate with local schools to provide supervised counselling services; (iii) conduct awareness programmes and mental health screening camps for local community.
