B.A. (Hons.)/ B.Sc. (Hons.) Psychology

The B.A. (Hons.) and B.Sc. (Hons.) in Psychology degrees at the Jindal School of Psychology & Counselling (JSPC) are four-year undergraduate programmes that focus on the human brain, mind, and behaviour.

The programmes are designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in psychological theory, experimentation, and practice. Students can also opt, in year four, for the B.A. (Hons.) or B.Sc. (Hons.) Psychology with Research degree, with the final year focused on experimental design and the collection and analysis of research data. The JSPC programmes are designed to nurture the next generation of professional leaders in the psychological sciences.

What is Psychology?

Psychology is the scientific study of human behaviour and mind. It explores how people think, feel, act, and interact with themselves and others. Psychology covers a wide range of topics, such as personality, development, cognition, emotion, motivation, social psychology, health psychology, and clinical psychology.

If you are interested in psychology, you can pursue a bachelor of psychology degree from one of the many psychology colleges in India. There are two types of bachelor’s degree in psychology: Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.).

What Makes It Different at JGU?

The JSPC B.A. (Hons.)/ B.Sc. (Hons.) syllabus employs a multidisciplinary approach, ensuring that students gain a broad understanding of the psychological sciences. One unique aspect of the programme is the opportunity for students to customize their psychology education—via selection of a wide variety of Psychology elective courses—based on their personal interests and long-term professional goals.

In addition to classroom learning, students gain hands-on experience through practicums and internships. The programme also offers access to a new student-oriented Brain and Behaviour Laboratory and a faculty-oriented Psychology Research Laboratory. There are also many JGU research centres, including several hosted by JSPC. This gives interested students ample opportunities to gain experience in research design and collection.

JSPC nurtures the intellectual growth of all students in a culture of learning and exploration. Graduates of the programme are well-prepared to pursue various occupational or academic pursuits and successfully navigate the opportunities and challenges of the future.

Scope of the Courses

The scope of B.A. (Hons.)/ B.Sc. (Hons.)  is vast and diverse, as it can be applied to many domains of life, such as personal, professional, social, and health. Psychology can help you understand yourself and others better, improve your well-being and happiness, and make a positive difference in the world.

Benefits of the Course

Pursuing a B.A. (Hons.)/ B.Sc. (Hons.)  from Jindal School of Psychology & Counselling (JSPC) offers several benefits. The programme’s multidisciplinary approach ensures that students gain a broad understanding of the psychological sciences, while the opportunity to customize or personalize their psychology honours subjects allows students to tailor their education to their personal interests and long-term professional goals. Overall, the B.A. (Hons.)/ B.Sc. (Hons.)  psychology degree at JSPC provides students with a well-rounded education that can lead to a fulfilling and meaningful career in psychology.

Programme Structure

The B.A. (Hons.)/ B.Sc. (Hons.)  in Psychology programme at Jindal School of Psychology and Counselling (JSPC) is a four-year undergraduate degree programme that aims to provide a comprehensive and rigorous understanding of psychological theory, experimentation, and practice. The programme consists of a mix of core and specialized courses in the psychological sciences and general elective courses, allowing students to gain broad exposure to fields of study outside of psychology.

The core courses provide a foundational understanding of the field of psychology and its many sub-disciplines. These courses include Introduction to Psychology, Critical Thinking and Academic Writing, Development Across the Lifespan, Statistical Methods of Psychological Research I and II, Cognitive Psychology, Environmental Psychology, Brain and Behaviour, Social Psychology, Educational Psychology, Cross-Cultural Psychology, Research Methods: Quantitative and Qualitative, Counselling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Forensic Psychology, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Psychology of Personality, Advanced Writing, and Psychology Essay Paper

In addition to the core courses, students take specialized courses that introduce psychological topics and findings beyond those offered in core courses, with an emphasis on the field’s major domains, including treatment (e.g., clinical and counselling psychology) and applied (e.g., education, forensic, industrial/organization). The programme also offers skill-based courses, such as Stress Management, Emotional Intelligence, Digital Research Tools in Psychology, and Psychometrics.

To ground theoretical learning in hands-on, real-world experience, all students participate in practicums and skill-based courses. Students must also complete internships during their winter and/or summer breaks, facilitating student engagement with disparate psychological professionals and organizations.

Students have the option to graduate with a B.A. (Hons.) degree or B.A. (Hons.) with Research degree. The latter requires specialized instruction in experimental research design, data collection, and analysis. Students must complete a Thesis during their final (fourth) year of study.

The programme also offers a multi-disciplinary approach, where students can complete minor certification from other schools of JGU. If requisite coursework is completed, students will graduate with a disciplinary minor.
