In February 2025 we achieved a significant milestone by establishing our Community Radio Station (CRS) incubated by the Jindal School of Journalism & Communication. Marking a new chapter in our community outreach Radio JSJC 90.8 MHz went "on air"!
We were awarded the Community Radio License from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India. The station’s broadcast reach will extend to not just the JGU campus but a 15-kilometer radius around the campus. We hope in the near future to create extension programs enabling community voices and community participation.
A community radio is a space for local conversations, local information, and a way to amplify voices that are otherwise marginalised. The concept is inspired by global examples from Bolivia to Sri Lanka to hyper-localise radio content in languages that make it more accessible, participatory and accurate. It is truly a radio by the people, of the people and to the people!
In 2002 Government of India through a new policy, enabled educational institutions to operate community radio stations with the aim of serving the interests of communities in and around the campus. The purpose of the radio is to provide a forum for sharing, collaborating as well as amplifying local voices as well as providing a platform for student and faculty to be creative and innovative.
Radio JSJC is a JGU wide student-led and faculty-supervised initiative. During the current phase students from the Jindal School of Journalism and Communication will be presenting and producing programs. JSJC will also collaborate with everyone on campus to celebrate the diversity of voices we have amidst us.
We all know the power of radio waves and the popularity of this medium despite the various forms of media. It was over the radio "at the stroke of midnight" that Indians awoke to freedom when Pandit Nehru delivered the midnight speech on August 15, 1947
