The B.A./B.Sc. (Hons.) Film and New Media programme is a four-year undergraduate programme that aims to cultivate future filmmakers and new media artists. The first two semesters of the programme are common to all students, providing an overview of audio-visual production, film history, and its connections with other art forms. The students will also learn classical storytelling through theory and practical classes, preparing them to become storytellers and responsible artists.
From the third semester, students will choose one of the four specialisations offered: Direction and Screenplay, Cinematography, Sound Design, or Editing. The curriculum includes several term-ending projects, allowing the students to apply their knowledge and skills in real-world situations. Assessment in the final two semesters is based on submissions and creative productions, and the programme includes Masterclasses conducted by experts in the field.
The programme’s pedagogy combines theory with practice and is based on a liberal arts approach to the humanities, expressive arts, and social sciences. The teaching faculty includes practicing film and TV industry professionals, and the students have access to industry-standard equipment and software. The programme also offers in-company work placements and film festival access, helping students broaden their industry knowledge and contacts.

Foundational Courses

Core Courses

Fiction filmmaking with a convergence of all filmmaking skills from shoots to post‑production.
Advanced courses
All courses in the third year are 'advanced courses'. They are also compulsory but may be replaced with credits from a partner university abroad. Expected learning outcomes are꞉

Cross‑Listed Electives
Students of the B.A./B.Sc. (Hons.) in Film and New Media may take Cross‑Listed Electives from the third semester onwards. They are welcome to choose one elective every semester from a large interdisciplinary catalogue of over 200 choices. We encourage our students to take an elective from any of the twelve schools at JGU. Meanwhile, the cross‑listed electives that we offer are highly popular, not only with our own students but also students from other schools at JGU.

Admissions to the programme are conducted through a holistic process over four rounds, assessing applicants based on their personal statement, supplemental application, Class 10 and 12 marks, Spontaneous Writing Round, faculty interview, and a JSAT score of at least 50% or equivalent scores from SAT, ACT, or JSAT-Law.

B.A./B.Sc. (H) Film and Media offers an array of career opportunities in the rapidly growing digital film and media industries. Graduates can look forward to building their careers as cinematographers, screenwriters, editors, sound designers, actors, content creators and media producers. Students will be equipped to manage any role in production and post-production of films, documentaries, music videos, advertisements and podcasts. Internships in reputed media organisations, production houses, film magazines, film festivals and independent filmmakers will broaden their understanding and approach towards cinema and its allied industries.
The Programme offers four years of comprehensive training in writing, research and advanced skill based courses which will enable graduates to access upcoming careers in writers' rooms, production planning and research for OTT streaming channels, Production companies and Casting agencies. Students can also look forward to opportunities as film critics, editors and short format content creators for film journals, celebrity magazines, news websites and social media. The Programme also seeks to broaden the horizon of what is understood as conventionally understood as cinema and offers studens a range of alternative career and higher educational choices in documentaries, film research, film curation and preservation.
The B.A./B.Sc. (Hons.) Film & New Media programme offers opportunities for students to study abroad and participate in exchange programmes with partner film schools globally. This allows students to gain exposure to different cultural and filmmaking traditions, expand their networks, and exchange ideas and projects with fellow filmmakers from around the world.
Furthermore, JSJC hosts the JGU International Documentary Film Festival, which features works from filmmakers across the globe. The festival serves as a platform for showcasing the talent and creativity of emerging filmmakers and provides a space for discussions and interactions on important social issues. The festival also includes the JGU Award for the best documentary and the JGU Prize for the best student documentary film, which are judged by renowned documentary makers and scholars from India and around the world.
