The B.A./B.Sc. (Hons.) Film and New Media programme offered by JSJC is a four-year undergraduate programme that aims to develop the skills of future filmmakers and new media artists. The B.A./B.Sc. in Film and Media programme is designed to provide students with the expertise to become full-fledged film professionals at an undergraduate level, which is a rare opportunity. In addition, the programme encourages students to work on their creative expressions in a general university setting, and pushes the boundaries of the audiovisual culture/medium.

Programme Structure

The B.A./B.Sc. (Hons.) Film and New Media programme is a four-year undergraduate programme that aims to cultivate future filmmakers and new media artists. The first two semesters of the programme are common to all students, providing an overview of audio-visual production, film history, and its connections with other art forms. The students will also learn classical storytelling through theory and practical classes, preparing them to become storytellers and responsible artists.

From the third semester, students will choose one of the four specialisations offered: Direction and Screenplay, Cinematography, Sound Design, or Editing. The curriculum includes several term-ending projects, allowing the students to apply their knowledge and skills in real-world situations. Assessment in the final two semesters is based on submissions and creative productions, and the programme includes Masterclasses conducted by experts in the field.

The programme’s pedagogy combines theory with practice and is based on a liberal arts approach to the humanities, expressive arts, and social sciences. The teaching faculty includes practicing film and TV industry professionals, and the students have access to industry-standard equipment and software. The programme also offers in-company work placements and film festival access, helping students broaden their industry knowledge and contacts.

Curriculum

Foundational Courses

All courses in the first year are considered 'foundational'. They are taught to all undergraduate students at JSJC. Expected learning outcomes are꞉

Exposure to literature, film and media | Industry skills such as public speaking, photography, performance, podcasting and audio‑storytelling | Situating stories and visuals in social context.

Core Courses

All courses in the first year and the first five courses in each semester of the second year are 'core' courses. These are compulsory and must be taken by all students of the B.A./B.Sc. (Hons.) Film and New Media Programme. Expected learning outcomes are꞉

Fiction filmmaking with a convergence of all filmmaking skills from shoots to post‑production.

Advanced courses

All courses in the third year are 'advanced courses'. They are also compulsory but may be replaced with credits from a partner university abroad. Expected learning outcomes are꞉

Non fiction filmmaking ‑ music videos, documentary, production design, performance, directing actors, film studies.

Cross‑Listed Electives

Students of the B.A./B.Sc. (Hons.) in Film and New Media may take Cross‑Listed Electives from the third semester onwards. They are welcome to choose one elective every semester from a large interdisciplinary catalogue of over 200 choices. We encourage our students to take an elective from any of the twelve schools at JGU. Meanwhile, the cross‑listed electives that we offer are highly popular, not only with our own students but also students from other schools at JGU.

Eligibility & Selection Process

Successful completion of Class XII examination in any stream from an Indian or recognized international board (CBSE, State Boards, Cambridge, IB, NIOS).

  • For IB Board: A minimum diploma with 24 credits (3 HL & 3 SL subjects) is required.
  • For Cambridge: An A-Level certificate is mandatory.

Admissions Process

Admissions to the programme are conducted through a holistic process over four rounds, assessing applicants based on their personal statement, supplemental application, Class 10 and 12 marks, Spontaneous Writing Round, faculty interview, and a JSAT score of at least 50% or equivalent scores from SAT, ACT, or JSAT-Law.

  • Review all the information before submitting the application form as you will not be permitted to make changes to the application form.
  • The application fee is Rs 3000/- to be paid digitally (through debit/credit/UPI/NET banking or Paytm)
  • Please select JSAT > AWAITED in the entrance exam field to proceed, you may select multiple entrance exams as well if applicable.
  • Keep your class 10th mark sheet, 12th mark sheet (if applicable), and photograph ready to be uploaded on the application form.
  • We will send you a copy of your application to your registered email ID.

*The Tuition fee, accommodation charges and other allied service charges are subject to an annual increase of ten percent (10%).

**The security deposit will be fully refunded, subject to the completion of studies and/or receipt of a ‘No Dues Certificate’. The security deposit shall not carry any interest.

Career Opportunities

B.A./B.Sc. (H) Film and Media offers an array of career opportunities in the rapidly growing digital film and media industries. Graduates can look forward to building their careers as cinematographers, screenwriters, editors, sound designers, actors, content creators and media producers. Students will be equipped to manage any role in production and post-production of films, documentaries, music videos, advertisements and podcasts. Internships in reputed media organisations, production houses, film magazines, film festivals and independent filmmakers will broaden their understanding and approach towards cinema and its allied industries. 

The Programme offers four years of comprehensive training in writing, research and advanced skill based courses which will enable graduates to access upcoming careers in writers' rooms, production planning and research for OTT streaming channels, Production companies and Casting agencies. Students can also look forward to opportunities as film critics, editors and short format content creators for film journals, celebrity magazines, news websites and social media. The Programme also seeks to broaden the horizon of what is understood as conventionally understood as cinema and offers studens a range of alternative career and higher educational choices in documentaries, film research, film curation and preservation.   

Study Abroad

The B.A./B.Sc. (Hons.) Film & New Media programme offers opportunities for students to study abroad and participate in exchange programmes with partner film schools globally. This allows students to gain exposure to different cultural and filmmaking traditions, expand their networks, and exchange ideas and projects with fellow filmmakers from around the world.

Furthermore, JSJC hosts the JGU International Documentary Film Festival, which features works from filmmakers across the globe. The festival serves as a platform for showcasing the talent and creativity of emerging filmmakers and provides a space for discussions and interactions on important social issues. The festival also includes the JGU Award for the best documentary and the JGU Prize for the best student documentary film, which are judged by renowned documentary makers and scholars from India and around the world.
