The B.Sc. (Hons.) Environment and Sustainable Development programme at JSES offers a comprehensive curriculum that covers a wide range of subjects related to sustainable development. The programme is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in the natural and social sciences, as well as in humanities, and equips them with the skills and knowledge necessary to contribute to the development of sustainable solutions.
In the first semester of the programme, students take foundational courses that are common to both the B.A. and B.Sc. tracks. These courses cover topics such as climate change and policy, ecology, environmental law and governance, sociological perspectives on environment, and wildlife and forestry. In the second semester, students take courses such as energy and environment, environmental impact assessment, ecological economics, and climate change and mitigation, among others.
In the third semester, students take courses such as sustainable development, environmental projects formulation and implementation, water science and law, land use for sustainability, and eco-toxicology and environmental biology, among others. In the fourth semester, students take courses such as research methods and strategies for natural resource management, sustainable agricultural practices and food security, poverty and inequality, and restoration ecology and conservation science, among others.
In addition to the core courses, students also have the opportunity to take elective courses such as climate, energy, and global environmental law and animal rights. The programme also includes a 4-credit summer internship, during which students gain practical experience in the field of sustainable development. In the final year of the programme, students undertake a dissertation on a topic related to sustainable development.
The pedagogy of the B.Sc. (Hons.) Environment and Sustainable Development programme at JSES is designed to provide a unique perspective on the sustainable development goals and equip students with a strong knowledge base and practical skills. To do so, students will learn the skills required for critical analysis, qualitative analysis, quantitative analysis, and problem-solving exercises for development.
The pedagogy of the programme is designed to provide a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to sustainable development, incorporating natural and social sciences with humanities. This approach enables effective environmental citizenship, as well as innovation and leadership in sustainability.
Graduates of the B.Sc. (Hons.) Environment and Sustainable Development programme from JSES can pursue careers in various fields, including but not limited to conservation, rural development, environmental impact assessment, sustainable energy, waste management, urban and smart city planning, and environmental health. They can also work as environmental managers, consultants, project coordinators and managers, and policy and governance advisors.
