The B.Sc. (Hons.) Environment and Sustainable Development programme at JSES offers a comprehensive curriculum that covers a wide range of subjects related to environment and sustainable development. The programme is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in the natural and social sciences, as well as in humanities, and equips them with the skills and knowledge necessary to contribute to the development of sustainable solutions.
In the first semester of the programme, students take foundational courses that are common to both the B.A. and B.Sc. tracks. These courses cover topics such as climate change, planetary boundaries and sustainable development goals, ecology, ecosystems, wildlife, environmental law and governance, sociological perspectives on environment and academic and research writing. environmental ethics, pollution and community health, waste management, environmental data analysis and water science and policy. In the second semester, students take courses such as environmental ethics, pollution and community health, waste management, environmental data analysis and water science and policy. In the third semester, students take courses such as energy and environment, corporate environmental responsibility, environmental impact assessment, environmental quality monitoring and assessment and GIS and remote sensing. In the fourth semester, students take courses such as environmental management systems, ecosystem restoration and conservation, hydrology and watershed management, behavioral ecology and sociobiology, natural hazards and disaster resilience. The fifth and sixth semester courses include ecology and evolution, environmental biology, environmental biochemistry and biotechnology, food and sustainability, environmental risk assessment and management.
In addition to the core courses, students also have the opportunity to take elective courses such as climate, energy, and global environmental law and animal rights in their 1st and 2nd years. In the 3rd and 4th years, students can pursue Minor and elective courses from 11 other schools. They can also opt for a semester abroad in international universities in 5th and 6th semesters, which is optional. In addition, students are required to complete a total of 4 credit-bearing internships and a final-year research dissertation/independent study modules.
