Shantanu’s teaching portfolio at JGLS includes undergraduate and postgraduate core courses including Public International Law, International Trade Law, International Investment Law, Cross-Border Trade and Investment, and Moot Courts and Trial Advocacy. He also teaches self-designed elective courses, namely Treaties in International Law and International Law in Indian Courts. He has served as a Visiting Faculty at Maharashtra National Law University (Mumbai), where he taught a postgraduate seminar on International Commercial Arbitration.
His scholarly interests lie at the intersection of public international law and international dispute settlement, encompassing international investment law, international trade law, law of treaties, law of state responsibility, law of the sea, international criminal law, practice of international courts and tribunals, and international commercial arbitration.
Shantanu serves as Assistant Director of the Centre for International Legal Studies (CILS), which is a research centre dedicated to research, teaching and training in different areas of public international law. He is the Principal Investigator for an ongoing project that aims to develop a white paper which explores the feasibility of setting up a multilateral court for resolving investor-State disputes. For more information about CILS, please visit https://jgu.edu.in/jgls/research/international-legal-studies#rp-04.
Shantanu brings several years of experience as a practising lawyer to bear upon his academic position at JGLS. He is a dual-qualified lawyer, admitted to practice in India (2013) and England and Wales (2024). He began his career in law with the corporate M&A team of a leading Indian law firm in its Mumbai office, where he advised clients across industry sectors on a range of matters including private equity investments, venture capital investments, strategic acquisitions, formation of investment funds and formulating pre-litigation strategy for post-M&A disputes. After earning his master’s degree from Leiden University, he worked with the international disputes practice of a leading European law firm in Rotterdam, where he counselled sovereign states, state-owned entities and private corporations on investor-State arbitrations, international commercial arbitrations and arbitration-related proceedings before Dutch courts.
He earned his first law degree, a B.A. LLB (Honours), from Hidayatullah National Law University (Raipur) in 2013. He earned an Advanced LLM in International Dispute Settlement and Arbitration from Leiden University in 2019 (where his LLM dissertation critically analysed the feasibility of establishing a multilateral investment court). Besides his degrees in law, he also earned an inter-disciplinary postgraduate degree in 2018, an MA in Diplomacy, Law and Business pursued as a Savitri Jindal Scholar at the Jindal School of International Affairs (JSIA).
